Serving not only Champaign County but also Champaign County and Union County, the Tri-County Regional Jail provides a detention facility that combines the efforts and resources of the three counties. It is a sprawling compound that covers a large area of land and is separated into several housing units to accommodate all levels of security for both male and female inmates.
As a large short term and long term housing solution, the Tri-County Regional Jail is able to offer a wide range of services to all residents, has both indoor and outdoor recreation areas, has a full commissary available in addition to healthy meals that are made onsite.
To determine if someone you know has been taken to the facility there is an online lookup, and the jail participates in the VINE program that allows law enforcement, victims, family, friends, and attorneys, to sign up for alerts and updates to the status of an offender so they are aware before any transfer or release occurs. This program provides safety and comfort to those who are concerned about the status of an offender and is especially beneficial for the victims.
There is a medical unit that provides care for all inmates should they become ill or injured and provides the necessary ongoing care for existing conditions and distributing prescriptions according to their included instructions.
Along with meals, recreational time, mental health support, group and individual activities, classes and support groups that all provide for personal growth and skill development, inmates are encouraged to have contact with their outside support system including friends and family and are provided three main ways to do so through mail, calls, and visits.
An inmate's family or friend may fund their commissary and other accounts through the kiosk that is in the lobby of the building, or they may access this online.
Phones are provided for inmates to make outgoing calls only, and they will have access to phones during each day if they have not lost their privileges for any reason, and these calls are funded through their inmate account.
Visits are video based and can be made for free onsite at the lobby visitation kiosk or they may be conducted remotely for a small fee, with all visits being scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
An online account must be created to access any visits and each of the visitors must be approved in advance, and they will then be able to schedule their visit. Visits are 20 minutes in length and the onsite kiosk is available from 7am until 10pm each day of the week, with online visits having the same or extended availability.

The tablets can be rented on a daily basis and while not directly connected to the internet, the inmates can use them for many activities.
All inmates receive some free time on the tablets each day. Purchasing a Gold Pass allows inmates access to the tablet for an extended period of time without interruption. The current fee for a 24-hour rental is $4.99, however Tri-County Regional Jail may have a monthly rental plan. The tablet should last 5-7 hours on a single charge. An inmate with a Gold Pass, may return the discharged tablet and take another one provided there is still time remaining on the Gold Pass.
