The Meigs County Jail maintains an average of 60 offenders in custody on any given day. Every year Meigs County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 1,200 offenders.
⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessThe original Meigs County Jail was built in 1963 and has been added to over the years, increasing the current size to a 60 bed capacity. To manage and run the facility there is a staff of 11 corrections officers with a doctor and a full time nurse to care for the detainees.
On an average day there will be around 50 inmates in the facility, and this varies throughout the year and changes based on many factors. To provide the best chances of successful reintegration there are several programs available at the facility including a GED class for those who need to finish high school, mental health care, church services once a week, and more.
To properly house each of the inmates and ensure that safety can be maintained around the clock, it has been built in 4 different blocks of cells. There is one cell block for the women, and the remaining three are for the men. This allows for the men to be separated as needed for minimum security, maximum security, and medium security, or for maintaining a block for isolating those who may be at risk for violence.
Both those who are arrested and charged locally as well as those who are facing state or federal charges can be held in this jail. Inmates are permitted visits once a week on Wednesday 7-8:30pm or Sunday 1-3pm.
Once arrested, the person is taken to Meigs County Jail for booking, a process that confirms identity, assesses charges, and determines if they will be released on their own recognizance, posted for bail, or held until court.
