Portage-Geauga Juvenile Detention Center

With 46 beds for male and female detainees, the Portage-Geauga Juvenile Detention Center is operated by a combined board from the Portage and Geauga counties. It is located in Shalersville, Ohio, and ensures that all needs of the detainees are met, including year round schooling to ensure they each get the same education as students in the public system, social interactions and opportunities to improve social awareness and relationship building, crisis counselling, and all of the medical and mental health support that is needed. Each of the rooms is for a single occupant, so there are no shared rooms or roommates, with a few rooms all sharing a common space to make up housing units. Schedules, vastation, and phone calls are all dependent upon the housing assignment, which is determined by age, charges, physical size and strength, and other necessary considerations to ensure each unit is safe for all residents. All meals and snacks are provided and follow the guidelines for the school breakfast and lunch programs to meet all nutritional needs. Phones: Each youth is permitted two phone calls per week, and the staff will assist youth in making the calls to their parents, attorney, or guardian. Incoming calls are not accepted. Visitation: Visits are permitted from only parents, stepparents, or guardians and will occur on Wednesday from 7pm until 7:45pm, Saturday 9am to 9:45pm, or Sunday 2pm to 2:45pm. Attorneys, educators, mental health professionals, and others are permitted to visit Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 11:30 am or 1pm to 3:30pm.
