Colleton County Juvenile Detention Center Information

South Carolina has a main central juvenile detention center that is located in Columbia and has space for up to 72 juveniles. Through the use of separate housing units, both male and female juveniles from 11 to 18 years of age are housed in the facility. Each will receive clothing and bedding upon their arrival, and parents are able to drop off any prescription medications to be distributed by medical staff. All medical care is provided by the facility, and mental health professionals are available to meet the mental health needs for any of the youth who are in residence. While in detention youth will receive education services that are equal to that of the public schools, as well as additional learning opprtunites to grow and develop new social skills and life skills, positive decision making, and how to make healthy choices. Several alternatives to detention are considered for each youth including work programs, home supervision, probation, and community service. Through the use of inhouse programs, out patient programs, and alternatives to detention, the state hopes to reduce recidivism and the number of juveniles who are detained each year.
