About the Greenville County Detention 'Building 2'
The Greenville County Detention Center is comprised of three separate buildings, and houses only adult inmates, with a separate juvenile facility located nearby. These facilities contain not only housing but also booking and release, welfare services, transportation areas, medical and dental sections, mental health services, laundry, and food services. These ensure that inmates have access to each of the services that they need to stay health while incarcerated, and to even improve their situation to prepare for success upon their release. Addictions are addressed, mental health concerns are treated, and new skills can be learned. The full capacity is 1,277 inmates, with a combination of double cells and dorm units. Building two is the old jail and was finished in 1976, then expanded and updated from a capacity of 203 to 511 with a focus on housing inmates. Another building was added in 1994 and is known as the new jail, or building one, and has been updated to increase capacity to 318 inmates in several units. The last building was added in 2007 and is mostly housing but also has space that maintains the many services that are available. Part of maintaining inmate mental health is access to contact with loved ones who are not incarcerated. This contact can be key to the progress they are making during their incarceration, and is encouraged by facilitators. The first and easiest to maintain is phone calls, which are only outgoing from the facility without the ability for people to call an inmate from outside. The phone accounts are created and funded through securustech.net, and every call is monitored or recorded for the safety of both inmates and staff. Phones are available to the general population from 7:30 each morning until midnight, with breaks for head counts and other functions. Mail can also be sent and received through a third party service that will check for contraband and upload the mail into the electronic system which is accessed via a kiosk in the housing units. It can be sent to their name and ID number c/o Securus Digital Mail Center-Greenville, PO Box 969, Lebanon, MO 65536. Mail that does not meet the standards published on the website will be returned to sender or destroyed. Legal mail can go directly to the detention center and will be opened in the presence of the inmate to look for contraband before it is given to them. Visits are perhaps the most important of these forms of contact, and are available 7 days a week with each inmate being permitted to have two visits each week for a half hour each. Times are based upon housing units, and are done via video monitor or through glass in the visiting area. Buildings one and two allow people to book on the same day of the visit, in person, and is done on a first come first served bases. Building four has hours from 8 am until 9 pm and is also done on a first come first served bases, and all building have restricted hours from 5:30-7am for breakfast, 11-12:30pm for lunch, and 4-5:30pm for supper.

Greenville County Detention 'Building 2' Booking Roster

What happens during booking in Greenville County?

After being arrested and taken into custody, and after being read their Miranda Rights, an offender will next be transported to the local police or department or the Sheriff’s Department in Greenville County for booking.

Booking is very involved and requires multiple steps in the process, however, keep in mind that most attorneys will advise that an offender remain silent and not offer any additional information about the crime they have been arrested for because anything they do say may be recorded and may very well be used against them in court.

What is the booking process like at the Greenville County Detention 'Building 2'?

Booking includes having their photo (mugshot) and fingerprints taken, as well as being asked a lot of questions about their personal history and state of mind. If it’s a serious felony, their DNA may also be taken. They will also be checked for warrants in Greenville County and other South Carolina and USA jurisdictions.

If the offender was arrested for a DUI offense, and has refused a breathalyzer test, they may also be forced to have blood drawn by a doctor or nurse.

It is also very likely that the offender will undergo a humiliating full body search while in the nude. This includes bending over, spreading their cheeks in the direction of an officer, and coughing. They will also be walked through a metal detector or x-ray machine, like those used at an airport.

What kind of questions are asked during booking?

The arresting jurisdiction will ask about gang affiliations, tattoos, medical conditions, prescribed medication they are taking, recreational drugs they are on or addicted to, allergies, if they are suicidal, and other relevant information that will help with determining their cell assignment and special needs.

What happens to an offender’s personal property during booking?

During the arrest and booking process an offender will also have all their personal property confiscated and held for either their release from jail, or with the offender’s approval, released to a friend or family member.

Personal property includes the clothing they are wearing, money, wallets, purses, cell phones, jewelry, body rings, earrings, watches, and even glasses if they are deemed a security risk. If they are allowed to keep their shoes or sneakers, the laces are removed.

What happens after booking?

At this point the offender will be allowed to make a free phone call to a person of their choice to notify them of their arrest, and/or arrange a bond or bail for their release.

If the offender is being detained and housed while awaiting arraignment, the Greenville County Detention 'Building 2' will provide a jail garment and slip-on shoes, a blanket, sheets, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and a towel.

Often, before they are dressed in the jail outfit and brought to their housing location, they will be forced to take a shower and undergo a disinfectant treatment for body and hair lice, scabies or other pests that may be residing on their person.

How long does the Greenville County Detention 'Building 2' Booking process take?

Booking can take anywhere from an hour to 24 hours or more. It all depends on the number of people that are awaiting processing, the number of staff on duty at the time, and the behavior of the offender.

If the offender is heavily intoxicated and/or violent, the Booking Officer may decide to stick the offender in a holding cell for several hours until they become more manageable.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

The Greenville County Sheriff recommends that you use a bail bond agent licensed to do business in Greenville County.

  • You can pay a cash bond yourself, or use your home in Greenville County, or in some cases the state of South Carolina, but the benefit of using a bail bond agent is that they take responsibility for making sure the inmate shows up for court in Greenville County, and if they don't, then they take the financial responsibility.
  • The typical fee for a bond will be between 10-20% of the bail amount; usually 15%.  So if an offender has a bail of $10,000.00, their bond will be $1500.00.

Call 864-467-2309 to find out the exact bond (plus other fees) amount, or look it up online by looking up the information on the Greenville County inmate locator.

Greenville County Bail Bond Information

Because Greenville County and South Carolina can change their bail bond procedures, it is always best to call either the Greenville County Detention 'Building 2' at 864-467-2309, or the court in the jurisdiction (i.e. Municipal Court, District Court, etc.) where the offender was charged, and do this right after an arrestee has been booked.

Ask the staff at the Greenville County Detention 'Building 2' or the Greenville County Court Clerk these specific questions:

  1. Is the defendant eligible for bail or a bond?
  2. How much will the bail or bond be, and what are the additional fees?
  3. Where do I go to pay it?
  4. Are there any days or times of the day or night when I cannot post bail?
  5. What types of payment are allowed? Cash? Money order? Credit card? What types of credit cards? Property or other collateral? Surety bonds?
  6. Do I have to use a bail or bond agent?

If you feel the bail is too high and you wish to get it reduced, contact a lawyer or the defendant's public defender and get them to look into what they can do to get a bail reduction. The sooner you get working on this the quicker you will get your loved one released.

This entire process will go smoother and faster with a criminal attorney or bail agent handling it for you.

Inmate Money Accounts

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Greenville County Detention 'Building 2'?

Depositing Money in an Inmate's Commissary Account at Greenville County Detention 'Building 2'

Whatever cash the inmate has on their person when booked into the facility will automatically deposited and credited to their account. When released any money left in the account will be returned to them in the form of a check from the Sheriff's Department or the Greenville County Detention 'Building 2' Trust Account. There may be circumstances where the inmate can give permission to have his money released to a family member or friend.

In addition to deposits made online or over the phone with jailpackstore, you can also deposit money for an inmate as follows:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person; in either Building One (20 McGee St) or Building Two (4 McGee St).

  • You will use a self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.
  • There is no maximum deposit for cash deposits.
  • Credit Card deposits cannot exceed $100 every 48 hours.

Option 2 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person.
Never send cash. If you do it will go in the inmate's property for when he gets out, not be put on his account.
Always send a Money Order or Cashier's Check from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.
Make the Money Order out to Inmate's Full Name c/o Greenville County Detention Center and put the Inmate's ID# in memo section of the Money Order.
Mail to:
Accounting Specialists
Greenville County Detention Center
20 McGee Street
Greenville, SC 29601

Failure to do this properly will delay your inmate getting his account credited and may require you to have to resubmit a second money order.
Call 864-467-2309 to ask any questions about this.
