Texas Court Process

Two Videos on a Texas Criminal Case, for Archer County Families

Our first clip, in English, follows a Texas prosecution step by step, ending at sentencing. Locally, the case leaves the Sheriff's lockup and moves to the 100 S. Center St. courthouse, where the 97th District Court hears felonies and the County Court hears misdemeanors. The second video covers the same steps in Spanish.

Felony or misdemeanor: where does an Archer County charge land?

Judge Byars's 97th District Court takes felonies, Judge Jackson's County Court takes Class A and B misdemeanors, and a JP court takes Class C tickets. District Clerk Rutledge (940-574-4615) and County Clerk Winter (940-574-4302) both answer that question by phone.

Where can relatives see an upcoming setting?

Either clerk can give it by phone, and some settings appear on the Tyler Odyssey records portal. The defendant's lawyer will also have it.

Is a court-appointed lawyer available?

Defendants who meet the income test get one. The request can be made before the magistrate or to a jailer, or by mailing the affidavit to the District Court Coordinator at P.O. Box 167, Montague, TX 76251 (admin@97thdistrictcourt.com). More about appointments sits on our courts page.

Where is the courthouse?

100 S. Center St., Archer City, TX 76351. Misdemeanor files and the County Attorney's office are kept at the Courthouse Annex, 112 E. Walnut St.

English or Spanish clip first?

Watch the English clip for the outline; the Spanish video tells relatives who prefer Spanish the same story. Neither video is legal advice for a specific case, so talk to the defense lawyer about yours.
