The Darrell B Hester Juvenile Detention Center houses youth who have been arrested for an illegal offense or who have broken the rules of their probation. Each of the juveniles is between the ages of 10 and 17. The San Benito School District provides the base education and academics, that run school hours year round with access to a GED program, and there is also full access to physical activity and programming that will encourage the development of social and life skills. Community resources are utilized within the campus to provide community based services for intellectual development, building positivity, creating positive social interaction, and building positive habits and decision making. It has an approved capacity of 61 beds and accepts both male and female juveniles, who are housed in separate housing units. Contracts are also in place that allow juveniles from other counties to be housed in the facility if needed, allowing them to also support communities around them. The staff nurse works with a contact physician to provide all of the medical care for students and a dentist attends regularly. Mental health professionals are on staff as well as others having contracts with the facility to ensure that all students are also provided the counseling and mental health care that is required during their detention.
