Tom Green County Inmate Search: Locating Someone at the Highway 277 Jail

After an arrest anywhere in Tom Green County, adults are booked into the Tom Green County Detention Center, 4382 N US Highway 277, San Angelo, TX 76905. It is the only adult lockup, and the Sheriff's Office operates it. Youths aged 10 to 16 are taken instead to the Juvenile Justice Center, 1253 West 19th Street, San Angelo, TX 76903, for youth detention and probation. This page covers searching, visits, money, mail, mugshots, warrants and more.

The official lookup is the Sheriff's inmate roster. Agree to its disclaimer, then open Current Inmates for everyone held today or 48 Hour Release for anyone let out in the last two days. Each record gives the SO number, booking date, arresting agency, charges and bond amounts.

Can't find the name, or want to be sure? Call the jail at 325-659-6597 and ask for Booking. Give staff the legal name and birthday. To understand the bond on each charge, read our bail page.

1. How does the Tom Green County roster work?

The Sheriff's roster is free, with no sign-in. Steps:

  1. Open the inmate roster and read the disclaimer page.
  2. Pick Current Inmates to see people held right now, or 48 Hour Release to see anyone freed in the past two days.
  3. Scroll the list by surname. If nothing matches, try another spelling.
  4. Open the record. It shows the SO number, the booking number, the booking date, which agency made the arrest, each charge and its bond amount.
  5. Copy down the SO number. Letters and deposits both use it.

The record leaves out a few things, such as the court, the type of bond and a release date. The Sheriff also warns that roster details come from public sources and should not be relied on alone. For anything important, confirm with the jail at 325-659-6597.

2. What if the roster comes up empty?

No match? Usually one of these explains it:

  • Booking takes time. Someone arrested a few hours ago may still be in intake. Check back in a few hours.
  • They already left. Switch to the roster's release view for the past 48 hours. Someone can walk out the same day after posting bond quickly or being released by the magistrate.
  • A different spelling. Search a second last name, an older married name or a hyphenated form.
  • Another county has them. When the arrest was on another county's warrant, the jail's Transportation Division handles moving the person.
  • A state or federal hold. Some people are moved to state prison or federal custody once a case ends.

Still no luck? Phone the jail at 325-659-6597 or the Sheriff's Office at 325-655-8111, which answers around the clock.

3. Could your person be somewhere besides the Highway 277 jail?

For an adult, the answer is almost always the one county jail. The Sheriff's jail page names no annex, separate women's jail or work release center.

  • Tom Green County Detention Center, also called the Detention Facility, 4382 N US Highway 277, San Angelo, TX 76905, 325-659-6597. Every adult booking in the county happens here. Trusties who work in the kitchen or outside have their own visiting days. The state rated it for 552 beds in 2022.
  • Juvenile Justice Center, 1253 West 19th Street, San Angelo, TX 76903, 325-655-2323. This is where youths 10 through 16 are detained. Juvenile probation works from the same building.
  • Probation's community corrections facilities. The Concho Valley CSCD, 3036 N Bryant Blvd., San Angelo, TX 76903, 325-659-6544, runs residential programs for people on probation. Call its Male Corrections Facility at 325-486-1868 or its Female Corrections Facility at 325-655-7585. These are not jails.

Four nearby counties, Coke, Concho, Irion and Sterling, have closed their own jails, according to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. If your person was arrested in one of those counties, call that county's Sheriff to learn where they were sent.

4. Can I see Tom Green County mugshots or booking photos?

Families often search for mugshots first. The roster record lists booking facts and charges. To see if it also shows a photo, open your person's record. To get a booking photo officially, write to the Sheriff's Office under the Public Information Act at 222 W. Harris, San Angelo, TX 76903, 325-655-8111. State law makes basic arrest information public (Government Code 552.108).

  • Texas regulates mugshot sites whose removal fee is $150 or higher. Errors or missing details must be corrected or the record removed, without charge. Under Business and Commerce Code chapter 109, those sites may not publish records a court expunged or sealed.
  • Immigration booking photos are requested from the agency itself, using the ICE FOIA request page.
  • Federal agencies normally withhold booking photos. The Marshals Service may put out a picture when it seeks a fugitive.
  • The Texas 10 Most Wanted pages from DPS include photos of the fugitives listed there.

5. Can Texas IVSS-Counties send release or transfer alerts?

Yes. Texas uses Texas IVSS-Counties, which replaced the old VINE system. It is free and confidential. Type all or part of a name to find people held in a county jail or under supervision. Alerts can be set up with or without creating an account. A 24-hour helpline takes calls in English and Spanish: 866-268-8959.

For a quick check without alerts, look at the roster's 48 Hour Release list. It shows people who left the jail in the last two days.

6. What does bonding out of the Highway 277 jail involve?

A justice of the peace serves as the jail magistrate each day, starting hearings by 1:00 p.m. That magistrate reads each person their rights, takes requests for a free lawyer and sets bail. State law requires this within 48 hours of the arrest.

  • Bonds are posted at the bonding window in the jail lobby.
  • A kiosk in the lobby takes cash, credit and debit cards.
  • A cash bond must be the full, exact amount. Over $5,000, it must be a cashier's check.
  • Surety bonds come through companies approved by the county's Bail Bond Board.

Our bail page explains each bond type, the holds that can block release and how to ask for lower bail. For laws that apply across Texas, our Texas bail laws page goes further.

7. Where are booking charges and court filings listed?

The roster record lists every charge with its own bond. That is the fastest place to look.

For court papers, use the county's court records portal, which both clerks link as "Search Judicial Records." Or call a clerk:

  • Felonies: District Clerk, Tom Green County Courthouse, 112 W. Beauregard, San Angelo, TX 76903, 325-659-6579
  • Jailable misdemeanors: the County Clerk's criminal office, 124 West Beauregard, San Angelo, TX 76903, 325-659-6555

A charge at booking may change later. The District Attorney decides which felony charges go to the grand jury.

8. How do people at the Highway 277 jail get an appointed lawyer?

The jail magistrate takes requests for free counsel. In this county, the request goes in through an online Application Questionnaire. The court should appoint someone within three working days of getting it.

The public defender for the Concho Valley gets most appointments. Its office is at 113 W. Beauregard Street, 1st Floor, San Angelo, TX 76903, 325-229-4671, open weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Private lawyers on court lists take the rest.

Family members with questions can call that office. It warns that jail calls are recorded. Ask your person not to discuss the case on the phone.

11. How do jail calls, video visits and messages work here?

During booking, people can make free calls within the local calling area. Phones in the holding cells only place collect calls.

After booking, calls go through the jail's phone and video provider. To block calls from the jail, call 844-724-2076. The same provider runs the video visits from home.

Assume every call is recorded, and avoid case details. The jail scans paper mail so people can read it on a kiosk in their cell. To ask about messages or email, call the jail at 325-659-6597. We also explain phone accounts on our jail calls page and electronic notes on our messaging page.

12. Where do letters for a Tom Green County inmate go?

Ordinary letters skip San Angelo entirely and travel to a scanning center's box in Longview:

Line one holds your person's full name and SO number, then "Tom Green County Jail," then this box: PO Box 591, Longview, TX 75606.

  • Standard letter-size sheets only, 5 pages at most, writing on the front side.
  • Send one photo per envelope. More than one gets the whole mailing returned.
  • Put your return address on the envelope.
  • Letters are scanned and read on the in-cell kiosk. The paper copy is destroyed after 30 days.

Newspapers go to the jail itself: Inmate Name - SO#, Tom Green County Detention Center, 4382 N. US Highway 277, San Angelo, TX 76905. Magazines, bulk mail and books are refused at both addresses. Legal and medical mail must go to the facility where the person is housed. Our jail mail page has general tips.

↑ Back to the question list

13. How do I collect belongings or account money?

Property and money stay with the jail until release, unless the person signs them over. For a family pickup while your person is still held:

  1. Your person signs a release form that names you.
  2. Call the jail at 325-659-6597 and ask for the Bookkeeper.
  3. Bring a state photo ID to the jail lobby.

Money from an inmate account can be released to a member of the public once every 30 days.

14. Who handles medicine, glasses and health worries inside?

The jail has a medical department at 325-659-6434. Staff will not release medical information, but you can call with a concern.

  • Medication: call medical first. Bring only current prescriptions, still in the pharmacy bottle. Drop them off at the lobby information window.
  • Glasses: untinted prescription glasses only, without a case.
  • Faith support: chaplains hold weekly services that are open to all faiths, and Bibles and other religious materials are free.

If care seems unsafe and the jail does not fix it, the state jail oversight agency, TCJS, takes complaints at its complaints page or 512-463-5505.

18. What if ICE files an immigration detainer at the jail?

Expect these steps:

  1. ICE lodges Form I-247A at the Highway 277 jail.
  2. The jail may hold them up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released, so ICE can pick them up (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
  3. Texas jails have to comply (CCP art. 2A.060). The hold ends if your person documents citizenship or lawful presence. A 2017 statute also forbids local rules restricting immigration enforcement (Government Code 752.053).
  4. Sheriffs who operate jails in Texas face a 2025 mandate: be in ICE's 287(g) program by the first of December, 2026. The Sheriff's Office, 325-655-8111, can say where this county stands.
  5. Once ICE has the person, search the ICE Online Detainee Locator. It works from the alien registration number, or from a full name and the nation where your person was born. If the locator shows nothing, ICE suggests calling the regional field office.
↑ Back to the question list

  • The TDCJ inmate search needs an exact surname plus first initial, or an ID number. It refreshes only on working days, and entries trail real events by 24 hours or longer.
  • For descriptions of the prisons, browse our Texas state prisons page.
