Upton County Inmate Search: Locating Someone in the Rankin Jail

Adults arrested in McCamey, in Rankin or on the ranch and oilfield roads between them are booked into the Upton County Jail, 1106 North Grand Street, Rankin, TX 79778. It is the only lockup in the county, and the Upton Sheriff is in charge of it. Below, find out how to confirm a booking, then work through charges, mugshots, appointed lawyers, visits, letters, deposits, belongings and hearing dates.

For a fast check from your phone, try Texas IVSS-Counties. That state-run site, free to use, tells you if a name is held in any Texas county jail. Next, open the official jail search, because a person booked an hour ago might not show up everywhere yet.

Nothing beats a call. Phone Grand Street at 432-693-2422 with a full name and birthday. Ask about the top charge, any bond amount and the next date on the docket. Release steps live on our Upton bail page. Hearings, pleas and sentences are laid out on our court page.

1. Searching the Upton County Jail by name

With room for just 54 people under its state certification (2022 figures), the Grand Street jail has a short list. Work through it like this:

  1. On Texas IVSS-Counties, enter all or part of the surname. A first name, if added, trims the list.
  2. Repeat the search on the official jail search.
  3. Swap in other spellings, a second surname if they use one, or a nickname.
  4. If both come up empty, call Booking at 432-693-2422.

Keep a birth date ready. In towns this size, two people can easily share one name.

2. Their name won't come up in either search

A blank screen can mean several things besides a release:

  • Intake isn't done. Prints, photos and an inventory of belongings come before anything shows online.
  • Quick release. They may have left on a bond or a ticket before any overnight stay.
  • Wrong county. A traffic stop a mile past the Upton line goes to that county's jail.
  • Another system. Federal, state prison and ICE custody each have their own lookups, covered lower down.
  • Age. Anyone under 17 goes through juvenile channels, not the adult jail.

Booking staff at 432-693-2422 can say whether the person was brought in, let go or moved.

3. Upton's one jail and the lockups next door

The county keeps a single adult jail, the Upton County Jail, 1106 North Grand Street, Rankin, TX 79778, 432-693-2422. It also houses prisoners for outside agencies by contract. The state's June 1, 2022 count found 33 people inside, 25 of them held for someone else.

When the arrest happened just over a county line, the person may be at one of these:

4. Are Upton County mugshots available to the public?

The jail takes mugshots during booking. To get one, write up a Public Information Act request and mail it to the Upton Sheriff at P.O. Box 27, Rankin, TX 79778. Call 432-693-2422 first to ask how the office likes to receive these. Texas makes basic arrest information public and says it must go out promptly (GC 552.108(c)).

A mugshot website that wants $150 or more for a takedown has to correct or remove a wrong or incomplete record free of charge. Those sites may not publish anything a court expunged or sealed through nondisclosure (Bus. & Com. Code ch. 109).

To seek a photo taken by immigration agents, use an ICE FOIA request. Federal mugshots are normally withheld, although a U.S. Marshals manhunt sometimes puts one out.

5. Custody alerts by phone or email from IVSS-Counties

Register a person on Texas IVSS-Counties, with or without an account. The system then reaches out when they are booked, set free, sent to state prison or given a new court setting.

  • 24-hour help line: 866-268-8959
  • Free, in English or Spanish
  • Confidential: the prisoner never learns you registered

Treat alerts as a safety net. For anything time-sensitive, phone the jail at 432-693-2422.

6. Getting out after an Upton County arrest: the bail basics

The 48-hour clock governs the first step. In that window a magistrate gives the Texas warnings, hands over the appointed-lawyer request and fixes the bail figure (CCP arts. 15.17, 17.028). Most people leave by one of three routes:

  • Cash. Someone deposits the whole sum, refunded later if every date is kept.
  • Bondsman. A surety posts the bond and keeps its fee.
  • Personal bond. A signature instead of money. Certain violent and gun charges are excluded.

Family violence bonds come with a four-hour hold after posting if the threat seems likely to continue. Even after bail, ICE or an outside warrant can keep someone in. The full rundown, including where to pay, is on our bail and bond page.

7. Finding out the charges against them

Staff at 432-693-2422 can tell you the booking charges. Exact counts may change once the prosecutor files.

  • Felony, Class A and Class B cases go on file at the courthouse clerk's office, 205 East 10th Street, Rankin, TX 79778, 432-693-2861. That office links a court records portal for name searches.
  • Class C tickets belong to whichever justice court the citation names.

Texas grades offenses from fine-only Class C at the bottom to capital felony at the top. The grade sets both the court and the punishment range.

8. Free counsel for someone sitting in the Rankin jail

The magistrate brings up free counsel at the very first hearing and assists with the form right there. Upton has no public defender; judges assign private attorneys in rotation.

  • Extra forms: District and County Clerk, 205 East 10th Street, Rankin, TX 79778, 432-693-2861.
  • The misdemeanor plan treats benefits such as SNAP, Medicaid, TANF, SSI or a public housing lease as proof of need.
  • In counties of Upton's size, an attorney must be named before three working days pass, counted from the form's arrival at court.

Hiring your own attorney is always allowed, before or after an appointment.

9. Seeing them in person at the Grand Street jail

Before you drive over, call 432-693-2422. Ask for the visiting schedule, how visitors are approved, which IDs work, the clothing rules and whether video visits exist.

Statewide, the jail commission promises each prisoner two or more noncontact visits every week. They run 20 minutes or more, and one is offered on an evening or weekend. Children may need an adult escort. Veterans behind bars can meet a veterans service officer free.

Our visitation page has more pointers.

10. Adding money to an inmate account in Upton

An account balance lets a prisoner buy items like snacks, soap and call time. Phone 432-693-2422 to learn the deposit choices right now, whether the lobby has a kiosk, and the payee line for money orders.

Don't mail cash, and hold on to every receipt. Background on accounts: our deposit guide, plus a separate commissary page.

11. Phone time, texts and messages from the Upton jail

Jail calls mostly run outbound, often paid through an account a relative opens. Booking rooms in Texas jails must include a telephone under TCJS design rules, which gives newcomers a chance to call home while being processed.

Ask jail staff at 432-693-2422 which calling or tablet service is used and how to load it. Assume someone may listen, and save case talk for the lawyer. Further reading: our jail calls guide and an inmate messaging page.

12. Letters to the Upton County Jail: address and rules

The Upton Sheriff collects mail at P.O. Box 27, Rankin, TX 79778. Before you write, phone 432-693-2422 to confirm that inmate letters use that box, how to list the person's name and booking number, and what can't be enclosed.

  • State standards let prisoners receive letters of any length, in any number.
  • Letters from lawyers are opened with the prisoner watching, just to check for contraband.
  • A piece that violates a posted jail rule may be rejected.

Addressing tips, photos and book rules in general are on our inmate mail page.

13. Collecting a wallet, keys and clothes from the jail

Bring ID. Evidence items stay locked up with the case file until a judge or prosecutor clears them.

14. Sick, injured or on daily medication inside?

Phone the jail at 432-693-2422 without delay. Describe the illness or injury, list medicines and doses, and ask how prescriptions are checked. Possible mental illness has to be reported to a magistrate within 12 hours of the jail noticing it (CCP art. 16.22).

When a problem goes unanswered, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, which licenses and inspects county jails, takes complaints. Its mailing address is P.O. Box 12985, Austin, TX 78711, and its phone is 512-463-5505. You can also use its online complaint form.

18. Immigration holds at the Upton County Jail

An ICE hold usually unfolds this way:

  1. Immigration agents send jail staff in Rankin a Form I-247A detainer.
  2. Upton jailers may keep the person up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
  3. Texas law, CCP art. 2A.060, binds the jail to the detainer. Paperwork proving citizenship or legal status cancels the hold. A separate statute, GC 752.053, keeps local governments from blocking immigration enforcement.
  4. A 2025 measure, Senate Bill 8, says jail-running counties have to put in for 287(g) participation by December 1, 2026. Ring the Sheriff's Office at 432-693-2422 to learn Upton's status.
  5. When ICE takes over, the ICE Online Detainee Locator takes an A-number. If you don't have one, a full name works when paired with their native country.

An Upton child whose alleged act came at any age from 10 through 16 is a juvenile under Texas law, so the Grand Street jail is off the table. At 17, it's the adult system. Officers reach out to a parent quickly, and a lawyer is in place before the detention hearing, which comes by the second working day.

Upton/Reagan Juvenile Probation, courthouse office at 205 East 10th Street, Rankin, TX 79778, 432-693-2170, can tell you the youth's location and the hearing time.
