Wood County Detention Center Inmate Search
Wood County Inmate Search: Locating Someone Held on Stephens Street
Arrests from Mineola to Winnsboro lead to one place, the Wood County Jail at 402 S. Stephens St., Quitman, TX 75783. The county calls the building its Justice Center, and men and women both stay there. These answers walk a worried relative through searching for someone, mugshots, release alerts, visits, money, mail, warrants, federal or ICE custody, prison transfers, teens and the arresting agencies.
Open the county's jail lookup and type a last name, plus a first name when too many people share it. Open a matching entry to read the booking details staff have entered. Fresh bookings need time to appear, and a person released or moved overnight may vanish from the list. Court filings sit in a separate county records portal described in the court date answer below.
When the screen doesn't settle it, call 903-763-2201. Jailers pick up around the clock. Ask about the booking, each charge and any bail figure. Then see our bail and bond page for getting someone out.
1. Wood County jail records: an online search walkthrough
- Go to the county's jail records search, the same link the Sheriff's Office puts on its jail page.
- Type the person's last name. Add the first name to narrow a common surname like Smith or Johnson.
- Choose the matching person in the results, then click through for the record.
- Note any S.O. number shown; mail and many jail requests need it.
- Nothing shows, or the record looks odd? Call 903-763-2201 and ask the jailer on duty.
The lookup runs on the same county records system that holds court cases and calendars. If a page will not load, try again later, or phone instead.
↑ Back to the question list2. Name not coming up? Reasons and fixes
A blank result doesn't always mean good news or bad. Run through these possibilities:
- Booking not finished. Prints, pictures and forms all come first, so recheck in a few hours.
- Spelling. Swap in a maiden name, or only part of a double surname.
- Already out. Someone may have paid bail, or the magistrate may have accepted a signature bond.
- Picked up on another county's warrant. Tyler, Sulphur Springs or Canton may hold the person instead. The neighbor jail list below gives phones.
- Held for federal agents or ICE. Those answers come later on this page.
- Moved to prison. Try the TDCJ search described in the prison answer.
Staff at 903-763-2201 can confirm releases and transfers. You can also register with Texas IVSS-Counties, covered in the alert answer, to hear about the next change.
↑ Back to the question list3. Which jail in or near Wood County could hold them?
Adults charged in this county stay at a single lockup: the Wood County Jail, 402 S. Stephens St., Quitman, TX 75783, 903-763-2201, fax 903-763-5464. The county's own name for it is the Justice Center. A recent expansion brought it to 185 beds, with separate housing for men and women. The Sheriff's Office runs it, and its mailing address is P.O. Box 307, Quitman, TX 75783-0307.
Someone arrested nearby on a different county's case may sit in that county's jail instead. Neighboring lockups:
- Smith County Central Jail, 206 E. Elm Street, Tyler, TX 75702, 903-590-2661
- Upshur County Jail, 405 North Titus, Gilmer, TX 75644, 903-843-2541
- Van Zandt County Detention Center, 1220 West Dallas Street, Canton, TX 75103, 903-567-4133
- Hopkins County Jail, 298 Rosemont, Sulphur Springs, TX 75482, 903-438-4040
- Rains County Jail, 313 E. North Street, Emory, TX 75440, 903-473-3181
- Franklin County Jail, 208 TX Hwy 37, Mt Vernon, TX 75457, 903-537-4539
- Camp County Jail, 203 Tapp Street, Pittsburg, TX 75686, 903-856-6651
4. Wood County mugshots: can I see or get one?
Want an official copy? To ask for one of the mugshots taken here, mail the Sheriff's Office a letter citing the Public Information Act. Its box is P.O. Box 307, Quitman, TX 75783-0307. The Act's law enforcement section, Gov't Code 552.108(c), still requires release of basic arrest facts. A request that will take longer than ten business days earns you a notice with the expected date.
Be wary of private mugshot sites. The Legislature put limits on them in the Business and Commerce Code, chapter 109. Those businesses can't bill you for pulling down an inaccurate or incomplete record. They also can't publish one they know was wiped by expunction or sealed under a nondisclosure order.
Immigration booking photos go through an ICE records request. Booking photos from federal cases usually stay out of public view; a Marshals Service release for a wanted fugitive is the main exception.
↑ Back to the question list5. Free alerts when they're released or moved
Texas pays for a notice service covering every county jail, called Texas IVSS-Counties. Register online at no cost or call 866-268-8959 at any hour. Look up the name, whole or partial, and register for notices, with or without creating a login.
- You hear about a booking, a release, court settings being made or changed, and moves such as a transfer to TDCJ.
- Messages come in English or Spanish, by phone or online.
- The jailed person isn't told who registered.
The Sheriff's jail page still points to an older alert service. IVSS-Counties replaced it statewide. For anyone already in TDCJ, the prison system's Victim Services Division sends updates instead, 800-848-4284.
↑ Back to the question list6. Bail in Wood County, briefly
A magistrate must see each arrested adult within 48 hours, explain the charge and set bail (Crim. Proc. Code 15.17). Release then follows one of three routes:
- Cash. Pay the exact bail at the jail, which never closes, in currency, money order or cashier's check.
- Surety. A bonding agency posts the bond and keeps a fee it sets itself.
- Personal bond. A signature promise to come back, though some violent charges rule it out.
Texas adds a $15 fee on each of the first two bonds per booking, $30 at most; Class C bonds are exempt. Holds survive a paid bond: a parole blue warrant, a warrant from elsewhere, or an immigration detainer can keep the door shut. Our local bail page explains every step and the 2025 changes in state law.
↑ Back to the question list7. Learning what they're charged with
Start with the booking record in the jail lookup. If the details are thin, the jail at 903-763-2201 can read the charges and the bail on each one.
Formal charges come later. A felony indictment lands with the District Clerk, 903-763-2361. For misdemeanors, the prosecutor files an information with the County Clerk, 903-763-2711. Statewide, re:SearchTX lets a free account holder see indictments, informations and judgments. Texas law treats basic arrest facts, including the offense, as public (Gov't Code 552.108(c)).
↑ Back to the question list8. Court-paid and hired lawyers for the accused
Speak up at magistration. That officer has to describe the request process and make sure someone helps with the forms (Crim. Proc. Code 15.17). Here, those lawyers are private attorneys the judges appoint and pay on a fee schedule.
- The appointing court gets the request within 24 hours. Then, in a county below 250,000 people, a judge must name counsel inside three working days (Crim. Proc. Code 1.051).
- Next comes outreach: the lawyer must try to make contact no later than one business day after appointment (Crim. Proc. Code 26.04).
- Relatives can pull together pay stubs and bills to back up the request. A criminal Affidavit of Indigence sits on the District Clerk's page, along with the fee schedule.
Hiring a private lawyer is always allowed. Ask the District Clerk, 903-763-2361, which court has the case so your lawyer can file.
↑ Back to the question list9. How do I visit someone in the Wood County Jail?
Two kinds of visits are offered.
Face to face (through glass, with booth phones). Tuesdays and Sundays only. Each inmate gets two a week, no more than one a day, for 20 minutes, with up to two visitors counting children. Groups start every half hour. Men visit 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a gap from noon to 1:00. Women visit 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Book by phoning the jail by 6:00 p.m. the day before; only the next visit date can be booked.
Video. Schedule online through the jail's video vendor. Sunday through Thursday, slots run 7:30 a.m. to noon, 12:30 to 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday follow the same blocks but go until 11:30 p.m.
- Bring a driver's license, U.S. passport or Texas DPS ID.
- No shorts, short skirts, tank tops, low-cut or see-through clothes.
- Visitors under 17 need an adult. Leave phones and other items outside.
- Visits are recorded. Breaking the rules costs 30 days of visits for a first violation.
Our visitation page has more.
↑ Back to the question list10. Funding a jail account
- Online. Deposit by credit card, debit card or checking account through the jail's deposit vendor.
- Lobby kiosk at 402 S. Stephens St., Quitman, TX 75783. It takes cash, credit and debit.
- Not accepted. Jail staff won't take cash or money orders for deposits.
Account money can be spent for only three things: release, medical charges and commissary. Commissary orders arrive Wednesday mornings. Items passed in at the window must be approved first, and only if the commissary doesn't sell them. More on deposits is on our inmate money page and on the commissary page.
↑ Back to the question list11. Calls, tablets and electronic messages
Calls from the jail run through a private phone provider. For account or billing questions, its line is 888-506-8407.
Lawyers and other professionals can register with the visit vendor as privileged users. Their approved video visits and messages are not recorded. For tablets, messages or e-mail for families, phone the jail at 903-763-2201. Rates and rules are covered on our jail calls page; for electronic notes, see inmate messaging.
↑ Back to the question list12. Writing to someone behind bars on Stephens Street
Letters and photos go to a scanning center in Arkansas, not to the jail. They are opened, scanned and delivered on screen. Address them like this:
JailATM.com
Wood County Jail, TX
(booking name and S.O. #)
P.O. Box 16120
Jonesboro, AR 72401
- The sender's full name and return address are required.
- Don't send parcels, cards (they come back), framed or matted photos, sexual material, lipstick, glitter, or food.
- Legal mail goes straight to the jail: Wood County Jail, P.O. Box 307, Quitman, TX 75783.
- Books, magazines and newspapers use that P.O. Box 307 address too. Books must ship from the publisher, and hardbacks are refused.
Our jail mail page has tips on what gets rejected.
↑ Back to the question list13. What happens to their property, and how is it picked up?
The jail keeps the personal items it collected at booking. Collecting them for someone still locked up works like this:
- Call 903-763-2201 and ask what the jail needs from the person before handing items to you.
- Come to 402 S. Stephens St. with a photo ID.
- Avoid Tuesday and Sunday visiting hours, when property isn't released.
Money left on the account is handed back at release. Seized evidence follows its own track: the arresting agency or the judge says when it can go home.
↑ Back to the question list14. Injuries, illness and medication behind bars
Phone the jail at 903-763-2201 right away. Tell staff about medications, doses, allergies and the prescribing doctor. You may need to bring medicine or records; ask first. Medical charges can be taken out of the person's account.
Think the jail is ignoring a medical need? Report it to TCJS, the state agency that inspects county jails, using its online form or by calling 512-463-5505. Separately, the jail itself must post its grievance steps where prisoners can read them.
↑ Back to the question list15. Is there a Wood County warrant out?
Start with the deputies: the Criminal District Attorney sends every warrant question there, 903-763-2201. Deputies, the four precinct constables and town police all serve them. For photos of fugitives Texas wants most, open the Texas 10 Most Wanted gallery run by state troopers' parent agency, DPS.
To deal with one, get legal advice, then surrender at 402 S. Stephens St., Quitman, TX 75783, and bring bail money if you can. A ticket warrant from a justice court may be fixed by phoning that precinct to pay or get a new date. For a felony, ask the District Clerk, Wood County Courthouse, 100 S. Main Street, Quitman, TX 75783, 903-763-2361.
↑ Back to the question list16. Court dates and the county records portal
The county's records portal lists cases and court calendars. Search the defendant's name, then click the case for settings. Felony dates: District Clerk, 903-763-2361. Misdemeanor dates: County Clerk, 903-763-2711.
Sign up with IVSS-Counties, and a changed hearing date triggers a notice too. Our court page lays out each local court and the steps between arrest and verdict.
↑ Back to the question list17. Federal custody: Marshals, Tyler court and BOP
A federal arrest around here sends the case to Tyler and the Eastern District's courthouse there. The clerk's address: 211 West Ferguson Street, Room 106, Tyler, TX 75702, 903-590-1000. Within days, the defendant gets a detention hearing. A magistrate judge there names release conditions or keeps the person jailed for trial (18 U.S.C. 3142).
- Before trial, call the U.S. Marshals in Tyler, 211 West Ferguson Street, 4th Floor, Tyler, TX 75702-7200, 903-590-1370. They know which jail holds each federal prisoner.
- Post-sentence, the Bureau of Prisons locator shows the assigned prison.
18. Tracking someone in immigration detention
- The process starts when ICE hands the Stephens Street jail Form I-247A, its detainer.
- The I-247A requests a hold of up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
- State law obliges the jail to go along, though documents proving U.S. citizenship or legal residence cancel it (Crim. Proc. Code 2A.060).
- ICE officers come to Stephens Street and drive the person to a detention center.
- Look the person up in the ICE Online Detainee Locator. Search by A-number if the family has it, or else by name and native country. Dallas Field Office: 8101 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, TX 75247, 972-367-2200.
Senate Bill 8 (2025) set December 1, 2026 as the day by which jail counties must have asked ICE for 287(g) participation. Local progress? Ask the deputies at 903-763-2201.
↑ Back to the question list19. Locating someone moved to a TDCJ unit
Short state jail sentences mean time in a facility the state calls a state jail. TDCJ, the state prison agency, takes third-degree and higher terms. Between sentencing and pickup, the person stays in the county lockup. Once TDCJ collects the prisoner, intake staff sort them and assign a unit.
- A SID or TDCJ number pulls up the record quickest in the TDCJ inmate search; surnames must match exactly. Weekend changes show up on the next workday.
- Each prison's visiting rules and unit facts are collected in our Texas state prisons section, unit by unit.
20. Under 17: where teens go instead
Children ages 10 to 16 belong to the juvenile system, so the Stephens Street jail should never hold them. Turning 17 changes everything: Family Code 51.02 sends any new charge to adult court.
A judge must review a youth's detention inside two working days. For an arrest on Friday or Saturday, the clock is shorter, just one working day (Family Code 54.01). Phone the county's Juvenile Probation Department at 903-763-5772, or write P.O. Box 727, Quitman, TX 75783. Ask which center has the youth, the hearing date, and how parents can visit.
↑ Back to the question list21. Which police department made the arrest?
The arrest report names the agency. Deputies patrol the county's rural roads, and the same office runs the jail: 402 S. Stephens St., Quitman, TX 75783, 903-763-2201, fax 903-763-5464.
Towns in the county:
- Quitman, the county seat
- Mineola
- Winnsboro
- Hawkins
- Alba
- Yantis
Call city hall in any of these towns to learn whether it has a police department and its non-emergency number. The Sheriff's Office can also tell you which agency made an arrest.
Constables work all four precincts, and deputies can connect you. On state highways, DPS troopers make many arrests. In an emergency, always dial 911.
