About the Accomack County Jail
Operating under the supervision of the Accomack County Sheriff, the jail is a maximum security facility that houses inmates from right after their arrest and completes the booking process, through to the full service of their sentence. All detainees who are arrested within the area are housed at this facility, from misdemeanours to felonies, and to accommodate all of their needs the maximum security offers safety for all inmates and officers. Each of the officers and the staff work to maintain not only the legal standards required, but to also go above the base requirement s to maintain a safe and healthy space. With an average of 95 inmates on any day, the facility offers a range of services including meals, laundry, clothing and bedding supplies, as well as overseeing the parole and pretrial services and all forms of detention including home detention. Offenders are provided opportunities to improve their education, to receive job training, help finding a job upon release, and other supports and classes to assist inmates to be active and engaged members of their community. Community service is a common sentence and is overseen by the sheriff office but is the responsibility of the offender. Mail can be received at the facility, both letters from friends and family as well as publications that are sent directly from the publisher. To add money to the account of an inmate there is a kiosk located at the jail within the lobby that is accessible during business hours, as well as the ability to provide funds to the front desk directly. Inmates will have access to the phone banks in order to make outgoing phone calls to their friends and family, as well as being able to schedule visits on weekdays that are not considered to be holidays, and no visits will begin before 7:30am or extend past 9pm.

The Accomack County Jail allows inmates to receive pre-metered postcards like the type purchased from the post office. They may also allow certain photo postcards as long as they have not been tampered with or contain images that may be considered to be obscene or violent in nature. It is best to only use blue or black ink. Always include your name and return address.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.

Books
The Accomack County Jail allows books to be mailed directly to the jail from a reputable source such as AmazonBarnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. You can order them directly from your computer and have them shipped to the inmate at the address noted.
Books must NOT contain images or content that are considered excessively violent, pornographic or obscene. Any book that does not meet the Accomack County Jail standards will be disposed of. 
Hard cover books will not be accepted by the jail due to their potential to be used as a weapon.
