The Highlands Juvenile Detention Center Information

The Highlands Juvenile Detention Center functions to house the local young offenders as they wait for their trial or as they are working through rehabilitation programming after adjudication. It also houses alternatives to detention programs including outreach detention which allows youth to remain in the home and meet with their worker up to 6 days a week, intensive supervision which follows a return from a special placement, electronic monitoring, a weekend program for those who are detained on the weekends but return home for the weekdays, and community service. While in detention, either before or after a trial and adjudication, they will receive a full meal plan that follows the nutrition guides for the youth, as well as recreational time and activities, programs such as therapy and social skills development, life skills, and learn responsibility. Students are expected to attend classes during the week which are provided by teachers through the local school board. Medical care is provided onsite and mental health care is available to all juveniles. Family contact is vital to the success and support of the youth so they are provided with contact opportunities through mail, phone calls, and visits. Mail: P.O. Phones: Phones are provided for at least one call from the youth to their parent or guardian each week, though many will receive the opportunity for more calls. Visitation: Visits occur for 30 minutes at a time, within the one hour time period provided, and a court signed notice of visitation must be presented before the visit so arrive a few minutes early.
