About the Highland County Jail

A local Sheriff has several duties and responsibilities that range beyond the enforcement of the local laws. These often include serving all of the warrants for arrest, as well as ensuring that road laws are observed, community connection tasks, courthouse security, and transportation of inmates from the local jail to and from the courthouse or to another facility. Each of these is a valuable service to the community and is completed in addition to running the local jail. As a local holding facility, the jail often has both those who are waiting for bail, those who are currently in trial or waiting for their trial, as well as those who are serving their sentence after the trial has been completed. Both the sheriff office and the jail are open and operating around the clock every day of the year, however, to visit an inmate at the jail you will be required to schedule your visit at least one full day before you wish to visit, and you will need to arrive early to clear the security requirements before the visit begins. Inmates are permitted to make phone calls during their daytime hours and can remain in contact with their friends and family that way, however income phone calls are not permitted, and messages can only be left for inmates in the case of an emergency. Visitors are permitted and can have a half hour visit once each week during approved visiting hours. Video visitation may be available for those who are unable to attend in person visits. Visits may not begin before 7:30am and will not extend past 9pm and must be planned with the schedule for the specific inmate in mind to assure they will be able to attend the visit.
