Thurston County Inmate Search: Find Out Who Is Behind the Walls in Tumwater

Deputies and city officers around Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater drive most adult arrests to the Thurston County Corrections Facility, 3491 Ferguson Street SW, Tumwater, WA 98512. A second jail, run by the Nisqually Tribe, takes some arrests as well. You will also find answers on mugshots, accusations, attorneys, video visits, letters, deposits and hearing dates.

Open the Sheriff's online roster before anything else. An In Custody tab lists who is inside today, and a Recently Released tab lists who walked out. Type a surname, then read each row for the charge, booking date and court.

Still stuck? Phone the jail at 360-709-5900. Ask if your person is booked in, which charge is listed and the day a judge sees them. The bail page explains getting out. The court page explains hearings.

2. The roster shows no name: what now?

No row can still mean the person is in the system. Check each of these:

  • Booking is slow. Paperwork for a fresh arrest can take hours.
  • Different jail. Some city arrests are taken to Nisqually.
  • Police lockup. A city station can keep someone briefly before transport.
  • A ticket, not a cell. Officers sometimes hand over a hearing date and let the person walk.
  • Already free. A judge or a bond may have opened the door.
  • Handed off. The person may be with another county, the state or the feds.

The jail lobby is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed on holidays and from noon to 12:30. The booking desk can check by name at 360-709-5900.

3. All adult jails and holding sites near Olympia

These places hold adults arrested in this area:

  • Thurston County Corrections Facility, 3491 Ferguson Street SW, Tumwater, WA 98512, 360-709-5900. The Sheriff's Office runs this main jail. On the same grounds, Correctional Options offers work release and electronic home monitoring.
  • Nisqually Corrections Center, 11702 Yelm Highway SE, Olympia, WA 98513, 360-413-3019. Its 288 beds hold people for tribes, for other western Washington cities and counties, and for state corrections.
  • Olympia City Jail, 360-753-8417. Phone before driving, because the city may send its arrests elsewhere.

Someone arrested across the boundary may be in the neighboring jail. Browse JE's Washington jail directory and call the Sheriff's Office there.

4. Are mugshots available for Thurston County?

Searches for mugshots spike right after an arrest. In this state, a jail's booking picture is kept confidential (see RCW 70.48.100). Police can still use it during an investigation, and photos of anyone convicted of a sex offense may be handed out.

A photo, if one can be shared, comes from the arresting agency. The Sheriff's Office takes calls at 360-786-5500. Police numbers for the cities appear in the final answer here.

  • A booking photo taken by immigration officers needs a public records filing through ICE's FOIA portal.
  • Federal arrest photos are kept private. The U.S. Marshals Service is the lone exception and may release a photo when, for example, someone is on the run.

5. Free phone alerts when custody changes

VINE is a free, round-the-clock tool run by the state sheriffs' and police chiefs' association. Every city and county lockup is in the system, as is the Nisqually Tribal Jail, and so are the state's prisons. The feed refreshes roughly every 30 minutes.

  1. Go to VINELink or phone 877-846-3492.
  2. Search for the person's name.
  3. Decide whether alerts arrive by voice, text message or email.

VINE tracks custody and location only. It leaves out youth detention and court dates.

6. Getting out of the Tumwater jail: bail and other options

Washington courts lean toward sending people home on a written pledge to return. A judge adds limits or money only when there is a true danger of no-shows, witness pressure or violence, and must weigh the person's budget. Cash alone cannot be the only choice, and at most a tenth of a bond may be required in cash.

  • A first hearing comes before the court day closes after the arrest.
  • In domestic violence cases, the person remains in a cell until a judge acts, and a no-contact order often follows.
  • On workdays, cash bail goes to the court clerk, 2000 Lakeridge Drive SW, Olympia, WA 98502. Nights and weekends, use the Bail Window at 3491 Ferguson Street SW, Tumwater, WA 98512.
  • Pretrial Services, 360-754-2946, gives judges background on who can safely go home.

Any bond agent you hire needs a Washington license. The Department of Licensing lookup checks one, or phone 360-664-6611. Insist on fees in writing. Our bail page goes deeper, and the statewide bail rules give the big picture.

7. Reading the accusation: where the exact charge appears

The roster shows the booking charge. A prosecutor can change it before filing. After filing, the court record names the true charge.

  • Put the name through dw.courts.wa.gov, the state's free case lookup.
  • Misdemeanor files: District Court clerk, Building 3, 2000 Lakeridge Drive SW, Olympia, WA 98502, 360-786-5450.
  • Felony files: County Clerk, Building 2, 2000 Lakeridge Drive SW, Olympia, WA 98502, 360-786-5430.
  • Filing decisions: Prosecuting Attorney, Building 2 on that campus, 360-786-5540.

8. Free lawyer for someone who cannot pay

Yes (RCW 10.101.010). A court-paid lawyer is open to anyone on certain public benefits, anyone whose pay sits near or under the federal poverty line, and anyone who cannot afford a private lawyer. The jailed person asks at the first hearing. The judge then asks about money.

Thurston County Public Defense works from 926 24th Way SW, Building 6, Olympia, WA 98502, 360-754-4897. Olympia, Lacey and Yelm may hire their own defenders, so the judge can say who covers a certain case. Hiring a private lawyer is also allowed.

  • Kiosk at the Main Jail Bail door, 3491 Ferguson Street SW, Tumwater, WA 98512.
  • Online at gettingout.com.
  • Reception desk, which takes cash, plus checks from the U.S. Treasury and postal money orders.

Putting money on an account is not the same as posting bail. Our money guide lists more deposit routes. Our commissary article shows what a balance buys at the store.

11. Jail phone service and other ways to stay in touch

The phone system sends calls out only. Nobody can ring in. Calls run through ViaPath and are paid collect or from a prepaid balance. All of them are recorded, so save case talk for the attorney.

Ask at 360-709-5900 whether tablets, texting or email are turned on today. Usual choices are covered by our jail phone article and our jail messaging article.
