Park County Detention Center Inmate Search
Park County Inmate Search: Finding Someone in the Cody Jail
The county runs one jail, the 106-bed Park County Detention Center. The jail is part of the Law Enforcement Center at 1402 River View Drive, Cody, WY 82414. That building also holds the Sheriff's Office, dispatch and city police. Read on for searching, charges, weekend visits, deposits, mail, property and health care.
Look first on the Sheriff's free Arrests, Calls & Inmates site, which the Sheriff shares with the police in Cody and Powell. Search by last name. As a backup, try the state's VINE custody search, which refreshes about every 15 minutes.
Still unsure? Phone the line for inmate status and bond at 307-527-8761 and ask if the person is held and whether bond is set. Deputies will never call you asking for money, so treat a call like that as a scam. For release, read our Park County bail page. Hearings and clerks are listed on the court page.
1. How do I search the Park County jail?
- Open the Sheriff's Arrests, Calls & Inmates page. It's shared by the Sheriff and the two city police departments.
- Search by the person's last name and check the inmate list.
- As a backup, look them up on VINE. Wyoming's county jail records there refresh about every 15 minutes.
- Call the inmate status and bond line at 307-527-8761 if you still can't tell.
A Wyoming jail may share who it holds, where and the release date (W.S. 7-19-106(m)). One warning from the Sheriff: deputies will never phone you asking for bond or fine money. A call like that is a scam.
↑ Back to the question list2. What if the lookup shows nothing?
A missing name can have a simple cause:
- The arrest just happened and booking isn't done.
- The person bonded out, got a citation or was released.
- A Montana county, a federal agency or another Wyoming county is holding them instead.
- The name was typed differently, so try a nickname or a second last name.
For an arrest by city officers in Powell, call that police department's around-the-clock line at 307-754-2212. For anything else, the Sheriff's 24-hour dispatch is at 307-527-8700.
↑ Back to the question list3. Which jails nearby might have them?
The jail here takes adults and youth, men and women. It holds only cases that start in this county, and it says it isn't housing anyone from other counties right now. Sentences of up to one year are served here.
The county touches Montana and several Wyoming counties. Nearby jails include:
- Big Horn County Detention Center, 415 Murphy St., Basin, WY 82410, 307-568-9311.
- Hot Springs County Detention Center, 417 Arapahoe Street, Thermopolis, WY 82443, 307-864-3951.
- Fremont County Detention Center, 460 Railroad St, Lander, WY 82520, 307-332-1858.
- Teton County Detention Center in Jackson. Call the Sheriff's Office there at 307-733-4052.
- Livingston, Montana detention center, run by that state's other county with the same name, at 414 E. Callender St., Livingston, MT 59047, 406-222-4178.
- Carbon County Sheriff's Office in Montana, 102 Broadway Avenue North, Red Lodge, MT 59068, 406-446-1234.
4. Will Park County release a mugshot?
Under Wyoming law, a jail is free to release an inmate's booking photo and description, but it doesn't have to (W.S. 7-19-106(m)). Arrest records and reports go through the Sheriff's administrative assistant at 307-527-8714. Some records can't be released because of state law.
WDOC's public information office answers questions about prison photos at 307-777-5889. Immigration photos are requested through the ICE FOIA portal.
↑ Back to the question list5. How can I get release alerts?
Yes. The Sheriff's website points to Wyoming VINE for custody news. Find the person on VINE and choose to be notified by phone, text or email. You'll be told about a release or transfer. It's free and always on. Questions go to 866-994-8463, in English or Spanish.
Crime victims get hearing notices and case updates from a Victim/Witness Program in the prosecutor's office at 307-527-8660.
↑ Back to the question list6. How is bond posted in Park County?
A judge decides if bond is allowed and how much it is. Nearly every crime can be bonded, except capital cases. Small offenses follow a statewide list from $85 to $450. Here's how payment works at the jail:
- The jail accepts cash. It also takes money orders and cashier's checks, payable to the Sheriff of Park County.
- It won't take a credit card or a personal check.
- A bonding company can post it for a fee you won't get back.
Cash bond is returned through the court after the case ends, minus fines and costs, as long as the person made every hearing. Call 307-527-8761 to learn the amount. Our bail guide explains more.
↑ Back to the question list7. Where can I see the charges?
The jail lists the booking charge, but the County Attorney decides the final charges. Ask the court clerk for the official case. The Circuit Court has two offices:
- Courthouse, 1002 Sheridan Avenue, Room 206, Cody, WY 82414, 307-527-8590.
- Powell County Annex, 109 West 14th Street, Powell, WY 82435, 307-754-8890.
Felony cases end up with the Clerk of District Court in the courthouse at 307-527-8690, open weekdays 8 to 5.
↑ Back to the question list8. Is there a local public defender?
Yes. A public defender's office serves the area at 307-587-9277. The judge appoints one when someone can't pay for a lawyer. A person in custody without access to money, or one who gets Medicaid or similar aid, is presumed to qualify (W.S. 7-6-106). Defenders cover misdemeanors, felonies and probation violations.
The statewide office is at 316 West 22nd Street, Cheyenne, WY 82002, 307-777-7519. Families who want to hire someone can get names from the Wyoming State Bar at 307-632-9061. Legal Aid of Wyoming is at 877-432-9955.
↑ Back to the question list9. What are the weekend visiting rules?
In-person visits happen on weekends only, Saturday and Sunday, 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Here's what to know:
- Book your visit by phone by 5 p.m. on the Friday before.
- Each inmate gets up to three visits a weekend, about 40 minutes each.
- Two adults may come, or one adult with two children who are immediate family.
- The inmate must have seen a judge or been held for 72 hours first.
- Bring photo ID and come 15 minutes early. Late visitors are turned away.
To schedule, call 307-527-8750. Video visits are also offered on the inmates' tablets. Read our visitation guide for more.
↑ Back to the question list10. How can I add money for an inmate?
- Online or by phone: use the jail's deposit service, or call 866-345-1884. A service fee applies, and you'll need the inmate's ID number.
- By mail: money orders, cashier's checks and government checks all work. Make each one payable to Park County Detention Center, and put the inmate's name in the memo. Cash and personal checks aren't taken by mail.
- In person: cash deposits can be left on weekends, no appointment needed.
To get the ID number, call 307-527-8750, press 3, then 4. If the inmate owes the jail, half of each deposit pays that debt. Store orders go in Sunday night and usually arrive midweek. Extra tips are on our deposit help page and store account page.
↑ Back to the question list11. How do phones and tablets work?
Inmates call out from dayroom phones or from tablets. They pay for phone time from their own jail account, the same way they buy store items. Phones turn on after the morning check and shut off at 10:30 p.m. Families can't call in, though approved voicemails can be left. The tablet provider also runs messages and video visits, with support at 800-943-2189. Messages phoned in to staff aren't passed along except in a real emergency. All calls may be recorded. Setup steps are in our calling guide and tablet messaging guide.
↑ Back to the question list12. What mail can I send?
Address letters like this: inmate's name, c/o Park County Detention Center, 1402 River View Dr., Cody, WY 82414. Lawyers use the same address. Every personal letter is opened, scanned and checked. You may send:
- letters in ink, pencil or typed,
- cards and postcards that aren't oversized,
- money orders.
Photos of any kind aren't allowed. Neither are magazines, newspapers, clippings, stamps, stickers, glitter or blank paper. Softcover books must come from the publisher or a known seller and be approved first. Families may also drop off new underwear, socks, sports bras and one pair of approved shoes. Our mail guide has tips.
↑ Back to the question list13. Can family pick up property?
The jail releases all or most of an inmate's property at once. Keys, ID and legal papers can be handed over by themselves. Taking out money needs approval from command staff. Property left more than 10 days after release becomes the jail's property, so act fast. Call 307-527-8750 to set up a pickup.
↑ Back to the question list14. How does jail health care work?
No one is denied needed care because they can't pay. Each visit with the jail's medical staff costs $10, charged to the inmate. Outside care is billed to the inmate too. Medicare, Medicaid and VA benefits don't apply while someone is locked up. Medicine from outside usually isn't accepted. Flu shots are free from October through April. For a health worry, call the jail administration at 307-527-8714.
↑ Back to the question list15. Does someone have a Park County warrant?
Sheriff's deputies, Cody police and Powell police all serve warrants in the county. To ask about one, call Sheriff's dispatch any hour at 307-527-8700. Wyoming has no single warrant website for the whole state, so a clerk can check over the phone. Taking care of it early helps. Many people turn themselves in at the jail with their lawyer. Others call and request a different hearing date. You'll find the Circuit Court clerk at 1002 Sheridan Avenue, Room 206, Cody, WY 82414, 307-527-8590.
↑ Back to the question list16. How can I find their court date?
Check the release papers, or call the court:
- Circuit Court in Powell: 307-754-8890.
- Clerk of District Court: 307-754-8690 from the Powell side.
- City court in the county seat: the clerk at 307-527-7512. First appearances are Wednesdays at noon.
- Powell Municipal Court: 270 N. Clark St., Powell, WY 82435, 307-754-5106. Court meets after the first and third Monday at 3:30 p.m.
Powell city cases can be looked up with the search tool on the city's municipal court page. Read our court guide for the steps.
↑ Back to the question list17. What about crimes in Yellowstone or other federal cases?
Crimes in Yellowstone are federal. A U.S. District Court sits inside the park, in the Yellowstone Justice Center at Mammoth. Its address is 105 Albright Avenue, 2nd Floor, Mammoth, WY 82190, 307-227-7020. For federal cases from the rest of the county, the main clerk is at 2120 Capitol Avenue, Room 2131, Cheyenne, WY 82001, 307-433-2120. A detention hearing decides custody before trial (18 U.S.C. 3142).
Federal prisoners are tracked by the U.S. Marshals, whose Casper office sits at 111 South Wolcott, Room 138, Casper, WY 82601, 307-261-5411. After sentencing, use the BOP locator.
↑ Back to the question list18. How does an immigration hold work here?
- A hold starts when ICE sends Form I-247A.
- Jailers can then keep the person up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
- ICE officers then take the person into federal custody.
- Find them through the ICE Online Detainee Locator. Search with their A-number, or try their name along with the country they were born in.
ICE's Casper office covers this area: 150 E. B Street, Room 1014, Casper, WY 82601, 307-261-6590. Wyoming law has banned sanctuary policies since 2025 (W.S. 9-25-102).
↑ Back to the question list19. Where can I look up a state prisoner?
When a sentence is longer than a year, the person serves it with the Wyoming Department of Corrections. They start at intake and are later assigned to a prison. Search the WDOC inmate locator. It also covers people on probation and parole. Every facility is described in our Wyoming prisons section. WDOC's headquarters is at 1934 Wyott Drive, Suite 100, Cheyenne, WY 82002, 307-777-7208.
↑ Back to the question list20. Where are Park County youth held?
This county's jail is set up to hold both adults and juveniles. The Sheriff's September 2026 numbers show five youth booked that month.
Even so, state law favors letting a young person go home with a parent, guardian or trusted grown-up. Detention needs a judge's order, or a real need to protect people or stop the youth from running (W.S. 14-6-206). Parents get a call as soon as possible, and a hearing must happen within 48 hours, weekends and holidays excluded (W.S. 14-6-209). Youth cases are brought in Juvenile Court by the County Attorney. Call the jail at 307-527-8750 for help.
↑ Back to the question list21. Which agencies make arrests in Park County?

- Cody Police Department: in the Law Enforcement Center, 1402 River View Dr, Cody, WY 82414. City Hall: 307-527-7511.
- Powell Police Department: 250 N Clark Street, Powell, WY 82435, 307-754-2212.
- Meeteetse: a Sheriff's deputy serves the town under contract. Town Hall: 307-868-2278.
- Wyoming Highway Patrol: 1726 Beck Avenue, Cody, WY 82414, 307-587-9729.
- Yellowstone rangers: 24-hour tip line 307-344-2132.
Northwest College in Powell has campus security, not a police force. In an emergency, call 911.
