Weston County Inmate Search: Locating Someone in the Newcastle Jail

Every adult booked in the county ends up in the Weston County Detention Center, 25 N. Sumner Ave., Newcastle, WY 82701. It has 38 beds and sits inside the Sheriff's Office, which the visit rules call the Law Enforcement Center. The answers below help you locate a person and sort out visits, deposits, mail and property.

Look them up with the official inmate search. Type a first and last name, then look for the words "in custody." Results can trail a fresh booking by a few hours, so try a legal name and other spellings too.

For a fast answer, call the Sheriff's Office at 307-746-4441, weekdays 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Give the name on their ID and their birth date, and ask about charges and bond. Our bail page covers release, and our court guide covers what comes next.

Search for an Inmate or Active Arrest Warrant in Weston County

1. Is my relative locked up in Weston County right now?

You have two good options.

  1. Use VINE. The county links to the statewide VINE search. Type a first and last name, then look for "in custody." VINE also has a phone line, 866-994-8463.
  2. Phone the Sheriff's Office. Tell staff the name on their ID and their date of birth, and they'll say whether that person is booked.

Wyoming lets a jail share someone's name, photo, where they're held and when they leave (W.S. 7-19-106(m)). Charges and bond amounts aren't part of VINE, so ask staff about those.

2. Why can't I find them?

  • The booking just happened. Search results can lag for a few hours.
  • They're out already. Some people get a ticket and a court date instead of a cell. Others post bond fast.
  • A nickname or typo. Try their legal name and other spellings.
  • They're a minor. Kids aren't in adult listings. Read the youth section near the end.
  • They're in a different county or state. The next section lists nearby lockups.

Call the Sheriff's Office at 307-746-4441 when the search leaves you stuck. Someone picks up on weekdays from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

3. What nearby jails might have them?

The county has just one jail, the Detention Center on Sumner Avenue. People picked up on a road trip, or wanted by a neighbor county, may sit elsewhere:

Sometimes a judge in another Wyoming county sets bond over video for someone held here. Then relatives get 24 hours to come up with the money before the person can be driven away (W.R.Cr.P. 46.1(g)).

↑ Back to the question list

4. Are Weston County booking photos public?

Booking photo requests go through the Sheriff's Office. Wyoming permits jails to release booking photos, though each request is up to staff (W.S. 7-19-106(m)). Ask by calling 307-746-4441, or mail a letter to the Weston County Sheriff's Office, 25 North Sumner, Newcastle, WY 82701.

For a photo taken in state prison, try the Corrections public information office at 307-777-5889. For a photo ICE took, send a request through ICE's FOIA page.

5. Can I get a text when their status changes?

Yes. On VINE, find the person, then sign up. You'll hear by phone, text or email if they're released, moved or escape. The service costs nothing and keeps your name private from the inmate. If you were harmed by the crime, the County Attorney's Victim/Witness program can help too: 204 W. Main Street, Newcastle, WY 82701, 307-746-9131.

↑ Back to the question list

6. How do I find out the bond amount?

Phone the Sheriff's Office at 307-746-4441. Ask for the bond on each charge, what kind of payment works and where to bring it. For small misdemeanors, a statewide chart sets amounts from $85 to $450. Bigger charges wait for a judge. The Clerk of District Court, 307-746-4778, collects bonds too. Our bail guide has the rest.

↑ Back to the question list

7. Where can I see what they're charged with?

VINE won't show charges. The jail can read you the booking charge over the phone. After that, the court file is the real record. Circuit Court handles misdemeanors and fresh felony cases; it's in the courthouse basement at 1 West Main Street, Newcastle, WY 82701, 307-746-3547. Felonies bound over to District Court are with the clerk upstairs, 307-746-4778. The County Attorney can add, drop or change charges after reviewing police reports.

↑ Back to the question list

8. Will the court give them a lawyer?

It can. When they first see the judge, they should say they can't pay. The judge compares their income with federal poverty guidelines to decide (W.S. 7-6-106). Hiring a private defense lawyer is the other path. To learn which public defender office covers this corner of the state, call the State Public Defender, 316 West 22nd Street, Cheyenne, WY 82002, 307-777-7519.

9. When are visiting hours at the Weston County jail?

Visits are face to face, on two days:

  • Wednesday: 7 to 9 p.m.
  • Sunday: noon to 3 p.m.

On a visiting day, a person inside may have two visits of up to 30 minutes apiece. First, fill out a Visiting Privilege Application from the dispatch window, at least a day before. Leave no blank spaces. Wait for a phone call saying you're approved. An inmate can have five approved visitors at most. Only people who've been arraigned and aren't in disciplinary lockdown can have visits. Bring photo ID; a birth certificate works if you lack one. Leave purses, bags and phones in your car. Kids under 18 need a parent or guardian along. See our visiting guide too.

10. How do I add money for someone in the Weston County jail?

  • By mail: a U.S. Postal Service money order or a cashier's check. Only approved visitors may mail funds.
  • Dropped off: money orders and cashier's checks can be handed in at the jail.
  • Cash: taken only in person at the Detention Center.

Personal checks get turned away. For anything else about deposits, call 307-746-4441. Extra tips are on our money page and our commissary page.

↑ Back to the question list

11. Can someone in this jail call me?

The jail sets its own phone rules, and staff can explain how accounts work. Call 307-746-4441 to ask how to receive calls and what they cost. Staff may listen in on any form of contact, so keep details of the arrest off the line. Our phone guide and messaging guide give general tips.

12. What's the mailing address for inmates?

Write it like this:

Inmate's Complete Name
Weston County Detention Center
25 N. Sumner Ave.
Newcastle, WY 82701

Send it with the Postal Service. Mail can't be dropped off by hand. Put your first and last name and full address in the return corner. A letter missing that goes into locked property, not to the person. They may keep five photos at a time. Photos must not be Polaroids or sexual. Read our mail guide for more.

↑ Back to the question list

13. What happens to their things?

Belongings are logged and stored at booking. Most items come back on release day. To pick something up sooner, like car keys, call 307-746-4441 and ask what's needed. During visiting time, staff may approve a few clothing items: socks, underwear, white thermals and bras without underwire. Paperbacks, sealed puzzles, board games and playing cards can come in too, but they become jail property, except personal religious books.

↑ Back to the question list

14. Who do I tell about a health problem?

Call the Sheriff's Office at 307-746-4441 right away. Ask for detention staff. Have ready a list of each drug, how much they take and their doctor's phone number. Prescription medicine brought by a visitor must be in its original bottle and approved by staff. For a concern that keeps going, the detention administrator's office line is 307-746-3820.

15. Does someone have a Weston County warrant?

Sheriff's deputies carry out county warrants, while town officers in Newcastle and Upton handle warrants inside town limits. To ask if a person is wanted, phone the Sheriff's Office at 307-746-4441. No single warrant search covers all of Wyoming, so court clerks also check names by phone. Facing a warrant? Walking in with a lawyer beside you is the safest choice. You can also ask the clerk about setting a fresh court date. Circuit Court clerk: 1 West Main Street, Newcastle, WY 82701, 307-746-3547.

↑ Back to the question list

16. Which clerk knows the next hearing?

VINE won't list hearings. Look at the release papers, or call:

Our court guide walks through what each hearing means.

↑ Back to the question list

17. What if the charge is federal?

The U.S. Marshals Service is responsible for anyone held on federal charges. You'll find its Casper office at 111 South Wolcott, Room 138, Casper, WY 82601, 307-261-5411. A federal judge decides at a hearing whether they're released or held until trial (18 U.S.C. 3142). Once the person is sentenced, try the federal BOP search.

↑ Back to the question list

18. Could an immigration hold keep them locked up?

  1. Immigration agents file Form I-247A asking the jail to keep the person.
  2. If so, they can stay up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
  3. Officers then move them to immigration custody.
  4. Search the ICE Online Detainee Locator with the A-number, or with the name and country of birth.

The ICE office covering northeast Wyoming is in Casper: 150 E. B Street, Room 1014, Casper, WY 82601, 307-261-6590.

20. Where do arrested teens from Weston County go?

State law leans toward letting a parent take a child home. A child gets locked up only to keep people safe or stop them from running (W.S. 14-6-206). When a child is held, a parent must hear quickly, and a judge reviews the hold within 48 hours, though Saturdays, Sundays and official holidays aren't part of those hours (W.S. 14-6-209).

Parents who don't know where their child went should phone the Sheriff's Office at 307-746-4441. Family Services in Newcastle answers at 307-746-4657. Youth records are sealed from public view.
