The South Bay House of Correction in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, like all jails is a maximum security facility. Because the inmates in this jail range from low level offenders to those being held for violent crimes like robbery, rape and murder, the security level is as high as is it is in any maximum security state prison. Some of the security features in this facility include security cameras, electronic detection and reinforced fencing topped with razor wire. Correctional officers in South Bay House of Correction are armed with mace and trained to use physical force to protect themselves and other inmates from violence.

The men, women and juveniles being held in the South Bay House of Correction are either awaiting trial or have been sentenced in the Suffolk County Court System already and been sentenced to a period of time of one year or less. When an inmate is sentenced to a year or more, they are admitted into the Massachusetts Prison or Federal Prison System. Inmates in the South Bay House of Correction are fed three meals a day totaling 2,500 calories, are allowed access to phones to contact friends and family members, are allowed at least one hour a day for exercise, have access to books, bathroom and shower facilities. The inmates are allowed mail to be delivered to them as well as newspapers and magazine from trusted outside publishers.

The Suffolk County Jail and House of Correction does not have their own online Inmate Search, however if you want find out about an offender recently arrested, an inmate in custody or the amount of their bail call the Suffolk County Jail Records Department at 617-635-1100 x3005. For inmates at the House of Correction call 617-635-1100 x2017. 


Notice about Inmate Mailing Instruction:

The Suffolk County Sheriff Department requires that any letters to inmates must be written or typed in black ink only. Name and Address of the sender must be on the envelope. Do not use color, stickers or mail a letter with any stains or perfumes on it or it will not be delivered. Greeting cards must not be multi-layered.


The Suffolk County Jail houses male offenders recently arrested or awaiting trial. The House of Correction houses pretrial female offenders and males that have been sentenced to 30 months or less.


Inmate Money Information:

The only way to get money into an inmate's account is by mailing a money order to the inmate, made out to him or her. There is a $500 limit on the amount of money that can be in an inmate's account at any one time.
