The Bullock County Jail may be licensed for 28 inmates, but it is often forced to hold many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails turn over at least 40% of their inmates every month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, and roughly 8-9% stay six to twelve months. When someone is held longer than twelve months, they are usually facing a serious charge such as rape or murder. Those cases take longer to prepare for trial, so offenders arrested in Bullock County remain in the Bullock County facility much longer.
Every year, Bullock County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 560 offenders.
Bullock County keeps a small jail at 217 North Prairie Street, Union Springs, AL 36089. Call (334) 738-2670. Under Alabama law the county sheriff has legal custody of the county jail. The jail is licensed for 28 beds but sometimes holds more, especially on weekends. It holds adults waiting for court and people serving sentences under a year. People sentenced to longer terms are moved to state or federal custody. Bullock Correctional Facility, also near Union Springs, is a separate state prison.
Call the jail to confirm custody, charges and bond. After arrest, the person must go before a judge promptly and within 72 hours (Rule 4.3). Bullock County is in the 3rd Judicial Circuit with Barbour County. In most cases bail must be offered. The exceptions are capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great, and, after a hearing, Aniah’s Law offenses, a list voters expanded in May 2026. Judges begin with the Rule 7.2 schedule (for example $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor). Release may come on recognizance, an unsecured bond, or a secured bond paid in cash, by money order or card, through a bail bond company, or with property. Look up case information on Alacourt, and if you may have a warrant, call the sheriff’s office or a lawyer before turning yourself in.
Visits must be booked at least 24 hours ahead by calling the jail. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There are no Sunday visits. Up to two guests may come, and each needs a government-issued photo ID and must be on the inmate’s approved list. Dress modestly: no shorts or sleeveless tops. Anyone under 18 must come with a parent or guardian.
Mail goes to the inmate’s name and ID number, Bullock County Jail, 217 North Prairie Street, Union Springs, AL 36089. Use blue or black ink and include your return address. Magazines and paperbacks must come from the publisher. Money orders for an inmate’s account can be mailed to “Att: Inmate Deposit” at the same address. Call the jail to confirm the current ways to deposit money. Phone accounts are set up through NCIC at ncic.com or (800) 943-2189, and calls run $0.21–$0.25 a minute.
No public bus serves the jail, so most visitors drive in. There’s gas at the Marathon at 102 Martin Luther King Boulevard and the Beeline Sunoco at 401 Conecuh Avenue West. McDonald’s (201 Conecuh Avenue East) and Subway (112 Conecuh Avenue) are both a short drive away.
