The Macon County Jail is licensed to hold 80 inmates at a time, but it often has to make room for more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails, at least 40% of the inmate population turns over each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take so long to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Macon County on such charges remain in custody at the Macon County facility much longer.
Each year, Macon County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 1,600 offenders. Most are then moved to either Mobile County or Shelby County, although their court appearances remain in Macon County.
If someone you love was arrested in Macon County, call before you drive to Tuskegee. The Macon County Jail at 246 County Road 10, which also houses the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, has been working at reduced capacity since 2025. In late spring that year the sheriff moved all of the jail’s roughly 42 inmates to the Mobile County and Shelby County jails because of problems with the locks, security, plumbing and electrical systems. Since then the Tuskegee building has taken new arrests only for short-term holding, and people held longer are kept in other counties. The jail’s condition was still a campaign issue in the May 2026 sheriff’s primary. So the first step is to learn exactly where the person is. The jail’s number is (334) 727-2503, and the sheriff’s office is at (334) 724-0669. VINELink (vinelink.vineapps.com) searches county jails across Alabama, including Mobile and Shelby.
When fully open, the jail holds up to about 80 adults, men and women, most of them waiting for trial, serving a short county sentence, or sentenced to state prison and waiting for transfer. Wherever the person is held, Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 says they must see a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours of arrest. Macon County cases go through the Fifth Judicial Circuit, and you can track court dates on Alacourt at v2.alacourt.com.
On bail: the Alabama Constitution gives most defendants a right to it. A judge may deny bail in a capital case when the proof is evident or the presumption great. Under Aniah’s Law (2022), a judge may also deny it after a detention hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson or robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain crimes against children; or terrorism. Since May 2026, when Amendment 1 passed with 81.6% of the vote, that list also covers solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder, and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. Bail usually follows the Rule 7.2 schedule, such as $5,000–$30,000 for a Class B felony or $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, though judges can depart from it. Release can be on personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond through cash, property or a licensed bonding company. Call the jail for the amount and to learn where to pay it.
If you have been told there is a warrant for you, look up the case on Alacourt, then call the sheriff’s office or talk with a lawyer before turning yourself in so you know where to report.
