The Escambia County Jail is licensed for 153 inmates, but it often has to make room for more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails turn over their inmate population on roughly this schedule:
- At least 40% each month
- Another 30% every 90 days
- Another 20% every six months
- About 8-9% remain six to twelve months
Anyone held longer than twelve months is usually facing a serious charge like rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Escambia County remain in custody at the Escambia County facility much longer.
Escambia County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 3,660 offenders every year.
The 153-bed Escambia County Jail is located within the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. The easily accessible building has a full set of ramps at the front with the back of the building being the windowless jail portion.
The Escambia County Jail is operated by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office at 316 Court Street in Brewton. The 153-bed jail holds people charged and awaiting trial, people picked up on warrants, those serving county sentences, parole and probation holds, and inmates waiting for placement in the state prison system. The sheriff’s office says its approach to pretrial detention is about making sure people appear in court, not about punishment. Staff take calls about inmates 24 hours a day at (251) 809-0741, and there is also an Atmore office at (251) 368-4779.
To see whether someone is in custody, use the current-inmate roster at https://www.escambiacountysheriffal.org/roster.php. There is also a released-inmates list. Once booked, a defendant must go before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours of arrest under Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3. Escambia County makes up the Twenty-first Judicial Circuit by itself. Case records are on Alacourt (https://v2.alacourt.com/). If you think there may be a warrant, call the sheriff’s office or an attorney before going in.
Most people have a right to bail under Alabama’s Constitution. Capital charges can be held without bail when proof is evident or the presumption great, and under Aniah’s Law (2022) a judge may deny bail after a detention hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. Voters expanded that list in May 2026 through Amendment 1 (81.6% yes) to include solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder, and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. Rule 7.2’s recommended ranges include $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, but judges may depart from them. Release can be on personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond through cash, property, or a bondsman. Call the jail for the amount; cash, credit, money order, and licensed bail bondsmen are accepted.
Visits are video-based through Inmate Sales, and you have to register online first. On-site visits are free, last 20 minutes, and run daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with up to three visitors per session. Everyone needs a state or government-issued photo ID. Dress modestly: no low-cut blouses, tank tops, short skirts or dresses, tight shorts, or hats. Remote visits are offered daily from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. at $0.20 a minute. Brewton has no public bus service to the jail, so most visitors drive.
For gas nearby, there is Circle K at 400 Forrest Ave in East Brewton and Country Express at 1027 Douglas Ave. Jack’s Family Restaurant at 819 Forrest Ave and Popeyes at 487 South Blvd are the easiest quick meals.

- First, you must register with Inmate Sales, and then schedule a visit.
- Each inmate is allowed an unlimited amount of visits per day. Remote visitation is $0.20 per minute.
- Proper attire is required. No low-cut blouses, tank tops, short skirts or dresses, tight shorts, hats or any other form of provocative dress will be allowed. Shirt and shoes must be worn.
- All visitors must provide proper state or government issued photo identification (i.e. driver’s license, foreign id or passports) for inmate visitation.
- On Site video visitation is available at no cost.
- A video visit lasts 20 minutes.
- Visitors may only use this system on the inmates assigned visitation day, whenever the inmates have free time.
- All rules set forth for non-contact visitation shall be adhered to when using the video visitation system.
- Any lewd, profane or inappropriate behavior shall result in loss of video visitation privileges for the visitor and/or inmate.
- Each inmate is permitted a maximum of three on site visitors per session.
- Visitation sign-up is limited and on a first-come first serve basis.
- Visitors are encouraged to go online and reserve a visitation time. Purchased visitation minutes are not transferable.
- An adult must accompany all visitors who are under 17 years of age. Children must be monitored at all times.
- Visitors are not allowed to bring any personal belongings with them into the visitation area other than their picture ID and/or a set of keys unless otherwise allowed by the jail.

Magazines
News, special interest or sports magazines may also be mailed to an inmate as long as they are shipped directly from the publisher. Any magazines that contain profanity, weapons, pornography or other content that is adult in nature will be confiscated by the jail staff and will NOT be delivered to the inmate.
Books

- It will then ask them to go to a direct link to the inmate's account on the Inmate Sales website.
- The website will then instruct them to use a credit card to put money on the inmate's account.
Cost of Chirping:
- If an inmate has available funds on their chirping device they will be able to chirp any cell phone and that chirp will appear to be a normal text.
- If you wish to stop receiving Chirps from an inmate, reply to the Chirp with STOP.
How to Send a Secure Email Message to an Inmate in Escambia County
