The Lamar County Jail’s license covers 50 inmates, but the jail often has to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails experience a monthly turnover of at least 40%, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, with about 8-9% of inmates staying six to twelve months. Those who stay longer than a year usually face serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Lamar County remain in the Lamar County facility much longer.

Every year, Lamar County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 1,000 offenders.

You can reach the jail at (205) 695-7103 and the Sheriff’s Office at (205) 695-7470. It was built in 1961 and holds about 50 people. The county makes around 1,000 arrests a year. Most people here are waiting for their cases to be resolved, and some are serving sentences of less than a year.

To check on someone, call the jail or search VINELink at vinelink.com, which can also send you an alert if the person is released or moved. The first court appearance must happen without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours of arrest under Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3. Lamar County is part of the 24th Judicial Circuit, and you can look up case details on Alacourt. If there may be a warrant, call the Sheriff’s Office or a lawyer first to plan how to turn yourself in.

The jail will give you the bond amount by phone. Bonds can be paid with cash, a money order, or a credit card, or through a licensed bail company. Most people in Alabama are entitled to bail. A judge can deny it in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great. Under Aniah’s Law (2022), a judge can also deny it after a hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. Since voters passed Amendment 1 in May 2026 (81.6% yes), that list also includes solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. Rule 7.2 recommends $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI. A judge may also release someone on personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured cash, property, or surety bond.

Visits are handled by Inmate Sales (Combined Public Communications). Each person gets one 30-minute visit a week with up to two guests, and visitors must be on the approved list. Book at least 24 hours ahead. Visiting times are 9–11 a.m. and 2–4 p.m. every day, plus 6–8 p.m. on weekdays. Bring a government-issued photo ID and dress modestly. Remote video visits are also available through Inmate Sales if you have a device with a camera, speaker, and internet connection. No public bus serves the jail, so most visitors drive. For gas, try Mac’s Texaco at 44390 AL-17 or Ronnie’s BP at 44525 AL-17. For food, Jack’s Family Restaurant is at 44745 AL-17 and Sonic Drive-In is at 44237 AL-17.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Lamar County Jail?

There are FOUR options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Option 1 - Dropping Money at the Jail
Bring money to the jail in person.
Either the jail personnel will process the Inmate Account payment or you will use a Jail ATM self-serve kiosk in the lobbies that accepts cash, debit or credit cards.

Option 2 - Deposit Inmate Money Online
Lamar County Jail uses Jail ATM to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Option 3 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail
Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union. Call the Lamar County Jail first as they may want you to do this online or at the jail kiosk instead.
Make the Money Order out to the payee the jail names (check with the jail first) and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order. Never mail cash or a personal check.
