Our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers address finding an inmate in the Fayette County Jail, how the jail roster works, and what happens after arrest and booking. Call 205-932-3205 if you have questions they don’t answer.

The Fayette County Jail may be licensed for 45 inmates, but it is often forced to hold many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails turn over at least 40% of their inmates every month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, and roughly 8-9% stay six to twelve months. When someone is held longer than twelve months, they are usually facing a serious charge such as rape or murder. Those cases take longer to prepare for trial, so offenders arrested in Fayette County remain in the Fayette County facility much longer.

Every year, Fayette County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 900 offenders.

Anyone worried about a warrant should call the sheriff’s office or a lawyer before turning themselves in.

Alabama’s Constitution entitles most defendants to bail. It can be refused in capital cases where the proof is evident or the presumption great. Under Aniah’s Law (2022), it can also be refused after a detention hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. Amendment 1, which passed in May 2026 with 81.6% of the vote, added solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder, and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. Under Rule 7.2’s schedule, a Class A felony runs $10,000–$60,000, Class B $5,000–$30,000, a Class A misdemeanor $300–$6,000, and DUI $1,000–$7,500, although judges may go higher or lower. Release can be on personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond through cash, property, or a bail bond company. Call the jail for the bond amount; it accepts cash, money orders, credit cards, and property.

Visits are by video through Inmate Sales (Combined Public Communications), and you must register before your first visit.
