Our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers explain how to locate an inmate in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, how jail rosters work, and what happens after an arrest and booking. If you need further assistance, call 205-349-4511.
The Tuscaloosa County Jail is licensed for 547 inmates, but on weekends especially, the jail often has to make room for many more offenders. Most city and county jails turn over at least 40% of their population monthly, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, with about 8-9% staying between six and twelve months. Those who remain longer than a year are generally facing serious charges like rape or murder. Because it takes time to prepare those cases for trial, offenders arrested in Tuscaloosa County must stay in custody at the Tuscaloosa County facility much longer.
Each year, Tuscaloosa County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 10,940 offenders.
The Tuscaloosa County Jail, 1600 26th Avenue in Tuscaloosa, is run by Sheriff Ron Abernathy’s Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. It holds men and women of every security level, on misdemeanor and felony charges, from every police agency in the county. The jail moved into its current building on February 15, 1995, after an $8.2 million construction project, and it earned American Correctional Association accreditation in 2002. The old Metro Jail section was demolished for a larger addition with a medical and psychiatric unit, expected to be finished around the end of 2026; meanwhile some inmates are housed in a temporary modular jail across the street. The jail’s number is (205) 349-4511, and the sheriff’s headquarters at 714½ Greensboro Avenue can be reached at (205) 752-0616.
Use “Who’s in Jail” at tcsoal.org to look someone up (a short captcha comes first). From that same listing you can send the person a free email with one photo attached. Everyone booked here sees a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours, as Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 requires. The county’s cases are heard in the 6th Judicial Circuit, and records are on Alacourt. If someone has a warrant, a call to the sheriff’s office or an attorney before surrendering can make the process go more smoothly.
The jail accepts cash bonds, bonds from approved bonding companies, property bonds, and conditional release bonds, though conditional release isn’t available on sex offense or domestic violence charges. The pretrial release office is at (205) 464-8684. Under Alabama law, most people are entitled to bail. Judges may deny it in capital cases when the proof is evident or the presumption great. After a hearing, Aniah’s Law (2022) also allows denial for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, or robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; or terrorism. Since May 2026, when voters passed Amendment 1 with 81.6% support, the list also covers solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. The Rule 7.2 schedule suggests $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, and judges can depart from it. Other release options are personal recognizance and an unsecured appearance bond.
Visits are video only. The jail kiosk is free and open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. seven days a week. Schedule by calling (205) 349-4511 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. the day before. Each inmate gets one visit a week, with up to two visitors. Visitors must be at least 16, anyone under 18 needs an adult with them, and everyone needs a current photo ID. The dress code is strict: no shorts, short skirts or slits, sleeveless or low-cut tops, or low-rise jeans, and stomach and cleavage must be covered. People released from jail recently may have to wait before visiting (six months after a misdemeanor, one year after a felony). Remote visits from home are booked through JailATM.com.
Personal mail must be a metered postcard no larger than 4×6 inches, showing the person’s full booking name and housing location, addressed to 1600 26th Avenue, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401. Add money at the lobby kiosk, by money order, or online through Inmate Canteen at team3.inmatecanteen.com. Money must post by 8 a.m. Wednesday for that week’s commissary order, and the weekly limit is $100. Calls are collect or PIN-based and are recorded. People can get medical care inside, with a $25 sick-call copay. The jail also runs work release and an inmate worker program. After release, leftover funds can be picked up Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., with the booking receipt and a state ID.
Tuscaloosa Transit Authority buses all start and end at the downtown Mund Terminal, 601 23rd Avenue, and run weekdays. Call TTA at (205) 343-2300 to find the stop closest to the jail. Drivers can get gas at the Chevron at 918 Lurleen B. Wallace South Boulevard or the Texaco at 3308 15th Street. For food, the McDonald’s at 2502 12th Street and the Hardee’s at 2515 Paul W. Bryant Drive are both a few blocks away.

What is the booking process for the Tuscaloosa County Jail?
After being arrested, the offender is brought to the Tuscaloosa County Jail for booking, which is the detailed process of identifying, classifying, deciding on charges, and whether the person will either be released on their own recognizance, allowed to be released on bail, or moved into the jail until their court date.
The first thing every newly arrested person must do is close their mouth. Everything an offender says may be used against them, so the best thing to do is remain silent when questioned about the arrest and what led to it.
These are the steps of booking someone into the Tuscaloosa County Jail:
- Personal identification.
- Mugshot(s).
- Questions about medical history, mental health, drug and alcohol use, and gang affiliations.
- Possible DNA.
- Full body search.
- Property forfeiture.
- Free phone call.
If you have any questions about when you can pay an offender's bond and what the cost will be, call the facility at 205-349-4511.
How do you pay bail for someone who has been arrested in Tuscaloosa County?
When an offender is arrested and brought to the Tuscaloosa County Jail in Tuscaloosa for booking, there are several outcomes after being processed.
1. The offender will be released with no bail, promising to return on a specific date to appear before a judge in either Municipal or Tuscaloosa County Court.
2. The offender is ordered to remain in jail until their court date.
3. The offender is allowed to be released after paying a specified bond or bail. Call 205-349-4511 to get the exact amount.
The payment of an offender's bail or bond can take many shapes.
- A cash bond is paid in full at the jail's bonding window or the clerk of court, usually by cash, cashier's check or money order, and many jails also take debit or credit cards through a lobby kiosk or an online bond vendor for an added fee; bring the inmate's full name and booking number, and the jail's number is 205-349-4511.
- It can be paid using a bail company, licensed to do business in Tuscaloosa County.
- Many courts accept land or a home as bond collateral; the owner shows clear title and equity of at least the bond amount, often double, using a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, and the court that set bail approves the property.
