We’ve put the most common questions about finding an inmate in the Hale County Jail in one place: our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers. They also explain how rosters work and what happens after an arrest and booking. Call 334-624-3081 for more help.
The Hale County Jail is licensed for 91 inmates at any given time, but it often has to make room for more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails, at least 40% of inmates turn over monthly, another 30% every 90 days, another 20% every six months, and approximately 8-9% stay six to twelve months. Stays longer than twelve months usually mean serious charges like rape or murder. Because those cases take time to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Hale County are forced to remain in custody at the Hale County facility much longer.
Approximately 1,820 offenders are arrested and detained each year by Hale County law enforcement agencies.
The Hale County Jail is the county’s detention center in Greensboro, located on Correction Drive and operated by the Hale County Sheriff’s Office under Sheriff Micheal Hamilton. It is licensed for about 91 people and books everyone arrested in the county on misdemeanor or felony charges. People waiting for court and those serving sentences of less than a year stay here, while longer sentences go to state prison. Call the sheriff’s office at (334) 624-3081.
Visiting is by appointment. Call (334) 624-3081 to learn your loved one’s time slots and book. Posted hours are 9–11 a.m. and 2–4 p.m. seven days a week, plus 6–8 p.m. on weekdays. Each person gets one 30-minute visit per week with no more than two guests, and visitors must be on the approved list and may be background-checked. Bring a government-issued photo ID, dress conservatively, and expect to stay seated. Children must come with a parent or legal guardian.
Hale County is in the 4th Judicial Circuit, alongside Bibb, Dallas, Perry, and Wilcox counties. Under Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3, anyone arrested must see a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours. Bail is a right for most defendants. Capital charges can be denied bail when the proof is evident, and Aniah’s Law (2022) allows denial after a detention hearing for offenses like murder, rape, sodomy, human trafficking, robbery, burglary, arson, domestic violence, and aggravated child abuse. A May 2026 amendment added attempt, solicitation, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle or building. The Rule 7.2 schedule suggests $5,000–$30,000 for a Class B felony, but the judge decides. Release can be on recognizance, an unsecured bond, or a secured bond using cash, a credit card, a money order, property, or a licensed bail bond company.
Search custody status through VINELink at vinelink.vineapps.com and court records on Alacourt. If you might have a warrant, speak with the sheriff’s office or an attorney before turning yourself in.
Send mail to the person’s full name and inmate ID, Hale County Jail, PO Box 160, Greensboro, AL 36744-0160. Postcards and letters in blue or black ink are accepted, and books must come from a publisher in softcover. Money goes on the account through CorrectPay online, by phone at (855) 836-3364, or at the lobby kiosk; Kellwell handles commissary. Phone accounts are with Paytel at (800) 729-8355, and Reliance Telephone rents tablets for messaging and calls.
