Marengo County Detention Center Inmate Search
We’ve compiled Frequently Asked Questions and Answers on finding an inmate in the Marengo County Detention Center, how jail rosters work, and what happens after an offender is arrested and booked. You can also call 334-295-2257 if you still have questions.
The licensed capacity of the Marengo County Detention Center is 118 inmates, though the jail frequently has to make room for more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails see at least 40% of inmates turn over monthly, 30% more every 90 days, and 20% more every six months, while around 8-9% remain six to twelve months. Stays longer than twelve months are usually tied to serious charges such as rape or murder. Those cases take time to prepare for trial, which means offenders arrested in Marengo County stay in custody at the Marengo County facility much longer.
Marengo County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 2,360 offenders annually.
Marengo County’s jail is in Linden, the county seat, at 101 Dunn Street, in the same location as the Marengo County Sheriff’s Office. The Marengo County Detention Center has 118 beds and holds adult men and women from across the county, including people waiting for court, people serving county sentences, and people sentenced to state prison who are waiting for transfer. The jail’s number is (334) 295-2257. The sheriff’s office is at (334) 295-4208.
The sheriff posts jail information at marengosheriff.com/jailinfo.php, and VINELink (vinelink.vineapps.com) confirms custody and sends release alerts. Once someone is booked, Rule 4.3 of the Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure calls for a first appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay and no later than 72 hours after arrest. Marengo belongs to the 17th Judicial Circuit with Greene and Sumter counties, and Alacourt (v2.alacourt.com) shows charges and hearing dates. If you think you may have a warrant, check Alacourt, then call the sheriff’s office or a lawyer before you go in.
Bail works the same here as everywhere in Alabama. Most defendants are entitled to it, but a judge can refuse bail in a capital case when the proof is evident or the presumption great. Under Aniah’s Law (2022), a judge can also deny it after a detention hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. Amendment 1 (May 2026, 81.6% yes) added solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. The Rule 7.2 schedule suggests ranges such as $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor and $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, which judges may raise or lower. Release comes by personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond in cash, property or through a professional bondsman. Call the jail for the bond amount and how to post it.
Visits are non-contact, and the jail uses Inmate Canteen (inmatecanteen.com) for video visits, both from home and on kiosks at the facility. Remote visits cost money and require you to upload a photo ID and a picture of your face for approval. Visits last 30 minutes, with up to two visitors, once a week, and you must be on the inmate’s approved list. Adult visitors need government photo ID, and children must come with a parent or guardian who has a birth certificate or guardianship papers. Wear conservative clothing: no shorts, sleeveless or low-cut tops, hats, or heels over 1 inch. Call (334) 295-2257 to confirm visiting days and schedule a visit. No public bus serves the jail; most visitors drive. In Linden, you can fill up at the Chevron at 401 S 9th St or the Marathon at 620 S Main St, and grab a meal at Jack’s Family Restaurant, 210 N Main St, or Subway, 506 S Main St.
Address letters with the person’s full name and ID number to Marengo County Jail, 101 Dunn Street, Linden, AL 36748.
