While the Marengo County Detention Center is licensed for 118 inmates at any given time, they often are forced to make room for many more offenders, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails have a monthly turnover of at least 40% of their inmate population, another 30% turnover every 90 days, another 20% every six months, and approximately 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Bail works the same here as everywhere in Alabama. Most defendants are entitled to it, but a judge can refuse bail in a capital case when the proof is evident or the presumption great. Under Aniah’s Law (2022), a judge can also deny it after a detention hearing for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson and robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; and terrorism. Amendment 1 (May 2026, 81.6% yes) added solicitation, attempt or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. The Rule 7.2 schedule suggests ranges such as $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor and $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, which judges may raise or lower. Release comes by personal recognizance, an unsecured appearance bond, or a secured bond in cash, property or through a professional bondsman. Call the jail for the bond amount and how to post it.

Adult visitors need government photo ID, and children must come with a parent or guardian who has a birth certificate or guardianship papers.
