Read through our Frequently Asked Questions and Answers for guidance on finding an inmate in the Prince Arnold Detention Center, how jail rosters work, and what happens after someone is arrested and booked. If you still need help, call 334-682-4715.
The Prince Arnold Detention Center is licensed to hold 64 inmates, though it frequently has to make room for many more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails see a monthly turnover of at least 40% of inmates, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months. About 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Offenders who remain longer than a year are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Since those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Wilcox County remain in custody at the Wilcox County facility much longer.
Wilcox County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 1,280 offenders per year.
The Prince Arnold Detention Center is the Wilcox County jail, located at 240 Highway 265 South in Camden and run by the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office. It is a medium-security jail with room for about 64 people. It holds men and women arrested in Wilcox County on misdemeanor or felony charges, some waiting for trial and some serving sentences of 12 months or less. Programs include AA, counseling, religious services, and education. The jail and the sheriff’s office (12 Water Street) share one phone number, (334) 682-4715.
Wilcox County belongs to the 4th Judicial Circuit, together with Bibb, Dallas, Hale, and Perry counties. After booking, Alabama Rule of Criminal Procedure 4.3 requires a first appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay and within 72 hours. You can check custody on VINELink and court filings on Alacourt. If there may be a warrant, call the sheriff’s office or an attorney before turning yourself in.
Call the jail to confirm the bail amount; it can be paid in cash, by card, or by money order, pledged with real estate, or written by a licensed bondsman. Personal recognizance and unsecured appearance bonds are also possible. Alabama gives most defendants a right to bail. Capital cases may be held without bail where proof is evident or the presumption great, and after a hearing under Aniah’s Law (2022) judges may deny bail for murder; first-degree kidnapping, rape, sodomy, sexual torture, domestic violence, human trafficking, burglary, arson, or robbery; aggravated child abuse and certain offenses against children; or terrorism. Since voters approved Amendment 1 in May 2026 (81.6% yes), that list also includes solicitation, attempt, or conspiracy to commit murder and shooting into an occupied building or vehicle. Rule 7.2 recommends $10,000–$60,000 for a Class A felony, $5,000–$30,000 for Class B, $300–$6,000 for a Class A misdemeanor, and $1,000–$7,500 for DUI, and judges may set more or less.
Visiting is on Sunday only, by housing pod: Pod B (men) 1–1:55 p.m., Pod C (men) 2–2:55 p.m., Pod D (men) 3–3:55 p.m., and Pod A (women) 4–4:55 p.m. The sheriff’s rules turn away visitors under 18, anyone without a photo ID showing date of birth, anyone who appears intoxicated, anyone who is out on bail, and anyone released from a jail or prison within the last six months. Dress modestly and call first, since visits are sometimes canceled. No public bus serves Camden, so plan to drive. Shell at 8 Claiborne Street and QV at 51 Highway 41 sell gas, and Hardee’s at 35 Highway 41 and Subway at 2 Camden Bypass are close by.
