Who handles federal charges from Perry County?

Federal cases start with groups such as the DEA, the FBI, and the Marshals, at times alongside county deputies. Court in Selma handles Perry County charges in the Southern District (Northern Division): Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, 908 Alabama Avenue, Selma, AL 36701. Staff are not there daily, so call the Mobile clerk at 251-690-2371. The first appearance is held quickly with a magistrate judge. The court also reads a report from pretrial services on risk. Once there is a federal sentence, a prisoner goes into the Bureau of Prisons (BOP), usually after some weeks. Find the person through the BOP inmate locator by name.

What happens when ICE lodges a detainer on someone at the Marion jail?

  • Right after arrest, fingerprints go to federal databases. If ICE thinks the person could be removable, it may send an I-247A detainer.
  • The hold request asks the Marion jail to detain the inmate a maximum of 48 hours past their release time. Saturday won't stop the count.
  • A paid bail won't clear the detainer; it just starts the 48 hours.
  • During that window, ICE may arrive to take custody. If ICE doesn't show up, that means they are released.
  • Check the ICE locator using an A-number plus home country. If you don't know the number, fill in the full legal name, home country and date of birth.
  • The agency sets the detention center, and it can change.
  • To ask where they are, reach the New Orleans field office: 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, 504-318-2360.

The agency behind them, the U.S. Marshals Service, publishes one only for a fugitive or escapee, when there's an immediate risk to the public, or when sharing it speeds a capture or a public warning.
