Back to questions ↑15. Picked up by federal agents? How it works here
Postal inspectors and the Marshals Service make federal arrests, often with deputies. Federal cases from here are heard in the Western District's Fort Smith Division: 30 South 6th Street, Room 1038, Fort Smith, AR 72901. The clerk's line: 833-853-0345. The first appearance is held quickly, before a magistrate judge. There will be questions with pretrial services before court. Unlike state court, a federal judge does not use a set dollar amount. A short hearing applying federal bail law sorts out whether they can leave.
Try the county roster right away, where U.S. Marshals custody may be noted. While it's open, the Marshals usually place them in a county jail by contract. The U.S. Marshals office for this area sits at 30 South 6th Street, Room 243, Fort Smith, AR 72901. Call 479-289-7470 or 479-424-5000 (call either one) to find someone in federal custody. When prison time is ordered, the BOP assigns a facility. Search on the federal locator when they arrive.
Back to questions ↑16. Someone has an ICE detainer. What now?
- Jail fingerprints get checked against federal systems that ICE uses. ICE may then place a detainer (Form I-247A).
- A paid bail doesn't end the detainer.
- Forty-eight hours is the most: ICE's request just asks jail staff to keep the door shut so ICE can get there. Saturday doesn't pause the clock.
- Officers from ICE usually collect them within that window. If nobody comes, staff must release them.
- ICE alone decides the detention center.
- The online detainee locator finds people by the A-number and birth country. Don't have the A-number? Enter home country, birth date, and the exact name instead.
- With questions, call ICE's New Orleans field office, which covers Arkansas: 181 James Drive W, St. Rose, LA 70087, 504-318-2360.
17. Going to the ADC from Ozark? How the transfer works
State prison terms are carried out through the Arkansas Division of Correction. Until then, the person stays in the Ozark jail until the state sends for them, which can take weeks. The trip ends at reception, and there new arrivals get checked in. At intake, the ADC checks physical and mental health, gang connections and security risk. Their final stop is a unit that suits those results.
Use the ADC inmate search to find them. The Arkansas prison page lists every state unit.
Back to questions ↑18. Are Franklin County mugshots posted online?
Yes. Current Franklin mugshots are shown in the Franklin County inmate search with charges.
For a request about a booking photo that isn't public, journalists should reach the sheriff's office at 479-667-4127. Pictures from an ICE booking are not shared at the office. Instead, use ICE's online FOIA request, and the agency then decides. Federal mugshots are kept private. Pictures taken by the U.S. Marshals come out only in rare cases: to find a wanted fugitive, when there is an urgent safety need, or if the photo may help find them or warn people.
