Still unsure? Reach the Ouachita County Detention Center at 870-231-5300.

The Ouachita County Detention Center’s licensed capacity is 150 inmates, but it often has to take in many more offenders, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in Arkansas turn over at least 40% of their population each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, while about 8-9% stay incarcerated between six and twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Those cases take longer to prepare for trial, so offenders arrested in Ouachita County remain at one of the Ouachita County facilities much longer.

In Arkansas, the constitution provides that all persons are bailable before conviction, except for capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption is great. For any other charge, judges in Ouachita County can release a defendant on their own recognizance, set conditions, or set bail.

Approximately 3,000 offenders are arrested and detained every year by Ouachita County law enforcement agencies.

The Ouachita County Detention Center in Camden is run by the Ouachita County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff David Norwood. The jail and the Sheriff’s Office share one address: 109 Goodgame Street, Camden, AR 71701. Call (870) 231-5300 for general questions, bond information or to reach detention staff. The detention center holds adult men and women. Most are being held before trial, while others are serving county sentences or are state inmates waiting for a bed with the Arkansas Division of Correction.

To find out who is in custody, use the Sheriff’s roster page at ouachitacountysheriff.org. It links to the current roster, a name search, and lists of everyone booked in or released over the past 24 or 72 hours. The same portal includes warrant information. If you find a warrant for yourself or a relative, it is usually wise to call the Sheriff’s Office or an attorney before going in. Court cases from Ouachita County, part of the 13th Judicial Circuit, can be looked up on Search ARCourts.

After someone is booked, Arkansas Rule of Criminal Procedure 8.1 calls for a first appearance before a judge without unnecessary delay, generally within 48 hours. Article 2, Section 8 of the Arkansas Constitution says all persons are bailable before conviction, except for capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption great. Judges follow Rules 9.1 and 9.2, which favor release on the person’s own recognizance or with conditions and allow money bail only when no other conditions will reasonably ensure the person comes back to court. If you use a bail bondsman, state law (Arkansas Code §17-19-301) sets the premium at 10% of the bond, rounded up to the nearest $5 and paid in full before release, plus small nonrefundable state fees. The Sheriff’s bail bonds page links to the state Professional Bail Bondsman Licensing Board’s list of licensed bondsmen who serve Ouachita County.

Visits take place two ways. On-site kiosk visits at the detention center are free and run Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The inmate schedules these visits; same-day visits are not allowed. Check in five minutes before your scheduled time, because late visitors are turned away. Every visitor needs an ID or driver’s license. Anyone under 18 must come with a parent, court-appointed guardian or other adult with legal custody who has valid photo ID. Dress modestly: no tank tops, crop tops or other clothing that shows a lot of skin. Remote video calls from home go through City Tele Coin (citytelecoin.com), carry a fee and are monitored.

There are three ways to put money on an inmate’s account. A money order made out to the inmate can be mailed at no charge to Inmate Banking, 109 Goodgame St., Camden, AR 71701. Online deposits through City Tele Coin and cash deposits at the kiosk in the Sheriff’s Office lobby, open 24 hours a day, both carry a fee. Personal letters should be addressed with the person’s full name and inmate ID number, Ouachita County Detention Center, 109 Goodgame St., Camden, AR 71701. Staff open mail to check for contraband, and books or magazines must ship directly from the publisher; hardcovers are not accepted. For release times and property pickup, call (870) 231-5300.

Camden has no public bus route to the detention center, so most visitors drive, and the Sheriff’s Office posts a map link on its website. Two fuel stops are right on Goodgame Street: Littlefield Express at 100 Goodgame St SW and the Exxon/Express Lane at 179 South St SW. For a quick bite, Andy’s at 715 California Ave SW and Sonic Drive-In at 670 Cash Rd SW are a few minutes away.

How Do You Deposit Money for an Inmate in the Ouachita County Detention Center?

There are two options for putting money on an inmate's books:

Choice 1 - Deposit Inmate Money Online

Ouachita County Detention Center uses CommissaryDeposit.com to process all online deposits to an inmate's account. The company charges you a small fee for doing so, but the fee probably isn't as much as gas and parking would cost to take it to the jail in person.

Choice 2 - Mail the Inmate Deposit to the Jail

Mailing a deposit takes more time to process than the other methods but can be done if you live too far away to bring it in person and you don't have a debit/credit card for online deposits. Never send cash. Always send a Money Order from the US Post Office, a reputable bank or Western Union.

Make the Money Order out to the inmate's name and put their Inmate ID# in memo section of the Money Order.

**Call 870-231-5300 first to ask Ouachita County Detention Center if this option is still available.
