The Washington County Juvenile Detention Center is licensed for 30 inmates, but it often has to make room for many more, especially on weekends. At most city and county jails in Arkansas, the inmate population turns over at least 40% each month, another 30% every 90 days, and another 20% every six months, and approximately 8-9% remain in custody for six to twelve months. Inmates held longer than twelve months are usually facing serious charges such as rape or murder. Because those cases take longer to prepare for trial, offenders arrested in Washington County remain in one of the Washington County facilities much longer.

Under Arkansas’s constitution, the right to bail before trial applies to every offense except capital offenses when the proof is evident or the presumption is great. For any other charge, a Washington County judge can set bail, release the defendant on their own recognizance, or release them with conditions.

Law enforcement agencies in Washington County arrest and detain approximately 14,800 offenders each year.
