10. Where do federal cases from El Dorado County go?

Federal cases come from agencies like the Postal Inspection Service and the FBI, sometimes alongside deputies. Federal hearings for this county are held at the U.S. courthouse in Sacramento, 501 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814, within the Eastern District's Sacramento Division. Clerk's phone: 916-930-4000. An officer from pretrial services also meets the inmate and gives advice for the court. Soon after booking, the inmate meets a U.S. magistrate for a first hearing. Federal court doesn't use a preset bail list. A judge settles what conditions apply at a release hearing under U.S. bail rules.

Meanwhile, the federal Marshals Service can house them in a nearby jail. Start on the jail's inmate list. Then try the federal U.S. Marshals in the Eastern District at 916-930-2030 (501 I Street, Suite 5600, Sacramento, CA 95814). After a prison term, the inmate goes into the Bureau of Prisons (BOP). Follow them with the BOP locator.

11. What if ICE puts a El Dorado County inmate on hold?

  • Jail fingerprints are compared through national systems that ICE can see. ICE may then place a detainer.
  • The detainer asks the El Dorado jail to hold them for ICE up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Placerville's jail runs under California's Values Act, SB 54: release tracks the local case, and handing someone to ICE requires a warrant signed by a judge or a qualifying serious or violent conviction.
  • A paid bail won't end the detainer.
  • ICE agents may collect them while held. If ICE never shows, the sheriff should release them.
  • ICE handles cases from Northern California from its San Francisco office: 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111, tel. 415-365-8800.
  • The ICE locator looks up people by your loved one's A-number and birth country. Missing your loved one's A-number? Type in DOB, birth country, and the exact name instead.
  • ICE alone chooses the detention center.

12. Where does someone from El Dorado County go after a prison sentence?

With a prison term, the person becomes a state prisoner; the corrections department takes charge. At first, the inmate remains in the El Dorado County jail while the CDCR has a bed ready, sometimes for weeks. Reception is next; paperwork, photos and tests. Prison staff review each person after checking any gang affiliation, physical and emotional health and how much security they need. Next comes the prison that suits them.

Families can check a CDCR inmate by full name with the state inmate lookup. For each unit, open California state prisons.

13. El Dorado County mugshots: can I view them online?

The El Dorado inmate lookup is the place to check. It lists El Dorado inmates without mugshots.

See Penal Code 13665 for the law. It is about social media only. Nonviolent arrests are the main target. Agencies may not post those photos there. Posts must come down within 14 days. Fugitives and threats are the exceptions. The sheriff's own website isn't covered. Even so, many sheriffs leave photos off.

For an ICE mugshot, submit ICE's online public records request. ICE must approve it. A reporter can seek an unposted booking picture through sheriff's staff at 530-621-6000. Any federal mugshot is not public, and the media cannot get one either. Marshals rules keep release to three cases: to find a wanted fugitive, for pressing community safety, or if a photo could help locate them or warn the public.

Deputies at the Sheriff's Office, 530-621-6000, confirm warrants by phone and check statewide records the same way. Look her up on the court's case index to see the case and next hearing. People booked on warrants here typically see a judge in two court days. If a warrant names you, a lawyer can plan your surrender, and the Main Street branch clerk can help with a new date.
