Back to questions ↑10. Who handles federal cases out of Lassen County?
Officers from the DEA, the ATF, or the Postal Inspection Service handle federal arrests. Susanville sits in the Eastern District's Sacramento Division; hearings happen in Sacramento, 501 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814. The clerk's office in Sacramento takes calls at 916-930-4000. Plan on a brief interview from pretrial services before court. Expect a first hearing before a federal magistrate soon after booking. Release isn't a preset figure in federal court. Using the federal Bail Reform Act, the magistrate leads a bail hearing and decides whether they can leave.
Meanwhile, U.S. Marshals often place your loved one in a nearby jail. Search for them on the sheriff's roster first. This district's Marshals office knows where your loved one is: 916-930-2030, 501 I Street, Suite 5600, Sacramento, CA 95814. Sentenced people leave the jail here for a Bureau of Prisons site. Track their facility through the BOP inmate search.
Back to questions ↑11. How will an ICE detainer work?
- ICE finds out about an arrest from the prints staff send. ICE may then place a detainer.
- This request asks the jail to detain them on ICE's behalf up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)). Susanville jailers, bound by California's Values Act (Gov. Code 7284.6), release people on the local timetable and share release information or transfer someone to ICE only under a judge's warrant or for qualifying serious crimes.
- Paying bail will not remove the detainer.
- ICE officers usually pick them up at the Susanville jail while held. If ICE never comes, this should mean they're released once the time is up.
- ICE itself picks where they go next.
- Check the ICE detainee locator by entering the alien number (A-number) and home country. Don't know the alien number (A-number)? You can still search with date of birth, home country and the exact name.
- Questions about their location go to the San Francisco ICE office: 630 Sansome Street, Room 590, San Francisco, CA 94111, 415-365-8800.
12. How will the move from the Susanville jail to the CDCR work?
California's prison system, the CDCR, holds people given state time. For now, most people wait in the Susanville jail until the state schedules the move, sometimes for months. The first CDCR stop is a reception unit for processing. Classification staff classify each person after checking security risk, any gang affiliation, and physical and mental health. The end point is the prison that matches those results.
You can find the person by CDCR number with the state inmate lookup. Our California prison guide explains visits and mail.
Back to questions ↑13. Does Lassen County show mugshots online?
Lassen mugshots are not shown in the Lassen County roster, only names and booking details.
California's rule is Section 13665. Social media is what it covers. Nonviolent arrests are the main target. Police can't post those mugshots online there. Posts must come down within 14 days. Exceptions exist for fugitives and public threats. Jail websites are outside this law. Even so, many sheriffs leave photos off.
A reporter may seek an unreleased jail photo from sheriff's staff at 530-257-6121. ICE photos become available just via an ICE public records request, if ICE agrees. The public and reporters cannot obtain federal mugshots. The Marshals Service, which takes federal mugshots, shares one only in narrow cases: for a wanted person, to help an arrest or to alert people or for immediate public safety.
Back to questions ↑14. Which agency arrested them in Lassen County?
- Susanville Police: 530-257-5603
- Lassen County Sheriff's Office dispatch: 530-257-6121
Westwood, Bieber and Herlong are covered by the Sheriff.
Back to questions ↑15. How does a Westwood or Herlong warrant arrest end up in Susanville?
Sheriff's deputies serve warrants across the high desert and bring the people they arrest to the county's detention facility. Their line is 530-257-6121, and they check names against statewide records too. For your own warrant, a local attorney can arrange a surrender at that facility, which is usually calmer than a roadside stop. Search the court's case index portal to see if a case is open and its upcoming hearing. The Riverside Drive clerk can then help you with a new hearing date.
