In California, including San Francisco County, criminal defendants generally have a constitutional right to bail before trial, with limited exceptions for capital cases and certain violent felonies. The California Supreme Court requires judges to consider whether a defendant can afford the bail they set, and to use less restrictive release conditions where those would ensure public safety and the defendant’s return to court. Under Rule 4.101, whether the defendant has asked for a jury trial cannot affect the bail amount.
You can find out an inmate’s bail by calling the San Francisco County Juvenile Hall at 415-753-7800. If you already know the charge, the San Francisco County bail schedule will show the standard amount. Bail here can be paid in cash, through a surety bond, or with a property bond.
Licensed for 132 inmates, the San Francisco County Juvenile Hall often has to make room for many more offenders, especially on weekends. A typical city or county jail turns over at least 35-40% of its population every month, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months, with approximately 8-9% staying between six and twelve months. Inmates who stay longer than a year are usually facing serious charges like rape or murder. Because it takes longer to prepare those cases for trial, offenders arrested in this county remain in custody at one of the San Francisco County facilities much longer.
San Francisco County law enforcement agencies arrest and detain approximately 33,840 offenders each year.
