The California Constitution gives most criminal defendants in Sonoma County a right to pretrial release on bail, with exceptions for certain capital and violent felony cases. The California Supreme Court has ruled that judges must consider a defendant’s ability to pay, and that holding someone only because they can’t afford bail is unconstitutional unless no less restrictive condition would protect public safety or ensure their return to court. Rule 4.101 also bars judges from considering a defendant’s request for a jury trial.

The licensed capacity of the Sonoma Main Adult Detention Facility is 755 inmates, though the jail frequently has to make room for more, especially on weekends. Most city and county jails in California see at least 35-40% of inmates turn over monthly, 25-30% more every 90 days, and 15-20% more every six months, while around 8-9% remain six to twelve months. Stays longer than twelve months are usually tied to serious charges such as rape or murder. The Main Adult Detention Facility, known as MADF, is Sonoma County’s jail. The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office runs it at 2777 Ventura Avenue in Santa Rosa, on the county administration campus just west of U.S. 101 near the Steele Lane and Bicentennial Way exits. The jail answers (707) 565-1400 around the clock. It opened in 1991 and was expanded in 1997. It’s a medium/maximum-security jail run on the direct-supervision model, with a rated capacity of 912 beds. In October 2025 it held about 755 people. Most were awaiting trial; the rest were serving local sentences, including AB 109 realignment terms, or awaiting transfer to state prison. The county’s second jail, the North County Detention Facility on Ordinance Road, closed during the staffing shortage of the past few years. Now everyone in Sheriff’s custody is held at MADF, apart from a small number housed in Solano County under contract.
Every arrest in the county, from Petaluma and Rohnert Park to Healdsburg, Sonoma and the Russian River, is booked here. Anyone held must see a judge within 48 hours, not counting Sundays and holidays (Penal Code §825). If a court orders you booked and released, the MADF lobby takes book, print and release appointments on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; call (707) 565-1400 to schedule.
To find someone, use the Sheriff’s Incarcerated Person Search at sonomasheriff.org/incarcerated-person-search. Accept the disclaimer, then search by last name or booking number. Note the booking number; you’ll need it for mail and deposits. The Sheriff also has an online warrant search at sonomasheriff.org/warrant-search. If a warrant shows up, talk to a lawyer before you turn yourself in.
California’s Constitution (Art. I, §12 and §28(f)(3)) gives most people a right to bail. The exceptions are capital crimes, certain violent or sexual-assault felonies, and felony threats where there’s clear and convincing evidence of a substantial likelihood of great bodily harm. The Sonoma County Superior Court sets the bail schedule under Penal Code §1269b, and a judge can change it or order own-recognizance or supervised release. Under In re Humphrey (2021), no one can be kept in jail only because they can’t afford bail unless no less restrictive condition would protect the public or ensure they come back to court. Bail can be posted in cash, as a property bond, or through a licensed bail agent. Call the jail to confirm the amount and how to post it there. Since summer 2026, criminal cases and the criminal clerk’s office have been in the new Hall of Justice at 625 Administration Drive, Santa Rosa, CA 95403. The clerk is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and takes payments; the court’s main line is (707) 521-6500. Bring the case number.
Personal visits require an appointment. They’re held only on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, at 9:00, 9:45 and 10:30 a.m.; 1:00, 1:45, 2:30, 3:15 and 4:00 p.m.; and 7:30, 8:05 and 8:45 p.m. Call (707) 565-1400 Tuesday through Friday between 3:00 and 9:00 p.m. to book. Slots are first come, first served, and same-day sign-ups aren’t allowed. Each visit lasts 30 minutes, with up to two visitors, and each person in custody gets one visit per visiting day. Check in 20 minutes early. If you can’t make it, cancel at least 24 hours ahead, or you could lose visiting privileges. Visitors with a felony conviction need written approval from the Facility Manager first; the Request for Visiting Approval form is on the Sheriff’s visitation page. Anyone released from custody within the last 30 days has to wait before visiting, unless they’re the person’s spouse. If you’re traveling a long way, ask when you call whether anything can be arranged around your trip. Between trips, the person can call you by video through the GettingOut app (about 12 cents a minute).
Personal mail no longer goes to the jail. Since October 2025 it has to go through Pigeonly, which scans it and forwards copies:

Use envelopes no larger than 4 by 9½ inches and paper no larger than 8½ by 11. Cards and postcards can be up to 5 by 7 inches. You can send up to 10 photos per envelope, each 4 by 6 or smaller. Include a return address. Legal mail, and magazines, newspapers and softcover books sent directly by a publisher or retailer, still go to 2777 Ventura Avenue, Santa Rosa, CA 95403.
For commissary money, deposit through InmateCanteen at inmatecanteen.com or 1-667-265-8182, or use the TouchPay kiosk in the MADF lobby during business hours. The jail also takes money orders, cashier’s checks and certified checks by mail. Call to confirm the mailing address, since personal letters now go through Pigeonly. Accounts are capped at $1,000, and InmateCanteen also sells care packs. Phone, tablet, messaging and video-call money goes into a separate ViaPath account at my.viapath.com or through the GettingOut app (support 1-877-650-4249). To get money or belongings released to you, the person in custody must fill out an Inmate Property Release form naming you. Call the jail to ask when you can pick them up and what ID to bring.
From U.S. 101, follow the signs for the Sonoma County Administration Center (exit 491B, Bicentennial Way) to Ventura Avenue. Visitor parking is limited, and some lots are permit-only while construction continues, so check the county complex parking map and leave extra time. Nearby, there’s gas at Shell, 777 Steele Lane, and Chevron, 2145 Mendocino Avenue. For quick food, try Jack in the Box at 1004 Steele Lane or McDonald’s at 1264 Mendocino Avenue. The devices are similar to common handheld tablets, but are made exclusively by GettingOut, a GTL / Viapath company.
Tablets offer specialized content and services for inmates to use during their stay at Sonoma Main Adult Detention Facility, such as:
