Broward Main Jail and Central Intake: finding someone after an arrest
Most adults arrested anywhere in Broward pass through Central Intake at the Main Jail downtown on SE 1st Avenue. Search Broward County Inmate Search or call 954-831-5900. For the next step, try our criminal court page.
1. Where does Broward take new arrests?
New arrestees are processed at the Broward Main Jail and Central Intake, 555 SE 1st Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301. After intake, a person may be moved to another Broward Sheriff's Office jail. The jail number is 954-831-5900. For the Broward Sheriff's Office, call either 954-831-8900 or the non-emergency line 954-764-4357.
Back to questions ↑2. Searching Broward's roster
Broward County Inmate Search shows which facility holds the person, plus charges and bond. Because Broward is large, check the facility name before planning a visit. VINELink will alert you if they're released or moved.
Back to questions ↑3. Getting out on bond in Broward
Broward is the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit. Magistrates hold first appearance within 24 hours, every day of the year, by video link from the jail.
- ROR means no money; the defendant signs and agrees to come back.
- A cash bond is paid in full; the court returns it at the end, minus costs and fines.
- A bondsman takes 10 percent, with $100 the least for any one charge; that fee isn't returned.
A paid Broward bond doesn't help if another agency wants the person or probation filed a violation. Missing court brings a warrant. Details are on our Broward bail guide.
Back to questions ↑4. Did a warrant send someone from Hollywood or Pompano Beach to Central Intake?
Quite possibly. Central Intake on SE 1st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale handles BSO's warrant bookings for Hollywood, Pompano Beach, Coral Springs and the other cities. Its main number, 954-764-4357, can confirm custody. Look up the underlying case through the clerk's public Case Search, and check FDLE's statewide wanted persons roster for anything from outside the county. When the warrant names you, a defense attorney can schedule a turn-in at Central Intake, which often speeds up bond. The Sheriff's Office posts visitation and commissary rules online for families.
Back to questions ↑5. Who gets a public defender?
The Seventeenth Circuit Public Defender takes clients a judge finds indigent. There's a $50 fee to apply, which can be waived.
Back to questions ↑6. Visiting Broward inmates
Visits depend on which BSO facility holds the person, and many are by video. Call 954-831-5900 to check the schedule first. See visit rules and remote visits.
Back to questions ↑7. Phone calls and messages
Inmates call out on collect or prepaid lines; incoming calls aren't possible. Set up an account through the jail's provider. Read our phone, email and tablet pages.
Back to questions ↑8. Deposits and commissary
Funds on account buy items like food, hygiene products and stamps. Use only BSO-approved methods. Visit our money page and commissary page.
Back to questions ↑9. Writing to a Broward inmate
Include full name and booking or jail number, and send to the address for the facility listed on the roster. No stickers, stains or perfume. See our mail guide.
Back to questions ↑10. Juvenile arrests in Broward
Teens under 18 are handled in juvenile court. A youth who is held is usually taken to the Broward Juvenile Detention Center, 954-467-4563, and sees a judge within 24 hours. Parents can call BSO at 954-831-8900.
Back to questions ↑11. Telling the jail about health issues
Call 954-831-5900 about HIV medicine, insulin, seizures, mental illness or suicide risk. Have prescriptions in hand.
Back to questions ↑12. Federal arrests in Broward
Federal cases from Broward go to the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida, Fort Lauderdale division, 299 E. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.
A magistrate holds the initial appearance, and a detention hearing decides custody instead of a fixed bail schedule. The U.S. Marshals (954-694-9200) house federal defendants in jails and federal detention sites. After sentencing, track them on the federal inmate locator.
Back to questions ↑13. ICE detainer steps in Broward
- Booking fingerprints at Central Intake go to DHS.
- ICE may issue an I-247A detainer.
- BSO can hold the person at ICE's request up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
- F.S. 908.105 tells the court to note the detainer in the record, inform the bond judge, and notify the prosecutor.
- F.S. 907.041 keeps unauthorized aliens accused of a forcible felony from release before first appearance, and the judge presumes detention, which the defense may rebut.
- F.S. 908.11 requires 287(g) agreements; ICE lists BSO under Task Force Model and Warrant Service Officer.
- Broward families can reach the Miami field office nearby at 2805 SW 145th Ave., Miramar, FL 33027, 954-843-5800, or search ICE's online locator.
14. From Broward to state prison
Once sentenced to prison, a person waits in a BSO jail until FDC transport. A reception center does medical checks and classification. Search the FDC offender database and see our Florida prisons list.
Back to questions ↑15. Broward mugshots online
Yes. Broward mugshots come up when you click an arrest number in BSO's Arrest Search. Copies go through a BSO records request (954-831-8900), with F.S. 119.071 limits.
For ICE photos, use ICE FOIA. Federal mugshots aren't public unless the Marshals release one to find a fugitive.
