Charlotte County Jail Inmate Search

Most defendants in Charlotte County have a constitutional right to be released before trial on reasonable conditions. Florida makes exceptions for capital and life felonies where the proof is evident, and for cases where no conditions would protect the community. People arrested on minor misdemeanors or traffic offenses are often released on a notice to appear. For other charges, a uniform statewide bond schedule from the Florida Supreme Court sets the minimum bond.

The easiest way to find out an inmate’s bail at the Charlotte County Jail is to call the jail at 941-833-6300 . If you know the charge, you can check the Florida uniform statewide bond schedule for 2026 to see the minimum bond. Each of Florida’s judicial circuits may set higher amounts, and a judge at first appearance, usually within 24 hours of arrest, can change the bond. Some serious charges require seeing a judge before any release. The county accepts cash, a surety bond, or a property bond, or can release an offender on personal recognizance.

The Charlotte County Jail is licensed for 1074 inmates at any one time, but it often ends up making room for many more, particularly on weekends. At most city and county jails in Florida, at least 35-40% of the inmate population turns over monthly, another 25-30% every 90 days, and another 15-20% every six months, while roughly 8-9% remain incarcerated between six and twelve months. Stays beyond a year usually involve serious charges like rape or murder. Preparing those cases for trial takes time, so offenders arrested in this county remain in custody at one of the Charlotte County facilities much longer.

Approximately 22,480 offenders are arrested and detained by Charlotte County law enforcement agencies each year.

About the Charlotte County Jail

The Charlotte County Jail is located at 26601 Airport Road in South Charlotte County, in the city of Punta Gorda, Florida, and is designed to house 1,074 inmates. Since it was built it never has really exceeded more than 750 people incarcerated at any one time, but given the growth of the state, eventually the jail will unfortunately reach full occupancy. The facility itself, which opened in February of 2001, is a direct supervision jail. The Charlotte County Jail is a full service facility with kitchen, laundry, medical and dental services. The facility is also equipped with a video courtroom for first appearances, arraignments and bond hearings, which saves the Sheriff's office time and money moving inmates back and forth to the Charlotte County Courthouse.

The Charlotte County Jail is at 26601 Airport Road, Punta Gorda, FL 33982, near Punta Gorda Airport. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office runs it. Sheriff’s headquarters is at 3110 Loveland Blvd in Port Charlotte, and the non-emergency line is (941) 639-2101. The jail’s own listed number is (941) 833-6300. The sheriff doesn’t publish a bed count, so call if you need current population figures. Like other Florida county jails, it holds adults awaiting trial and people serving county sentences of a year or less. Longer sentences are served in state prison.

The jail runs some unusual programs. A hydroponics garden and a channel catfish aquaculture program grow food for the jail and teach job skills, and both are paid for through the Inmate Welfare Fund rather than taxes. Inmates can also take GED classes, a re-entry program, parenting, AA and NA, substance abuse programming, anger management, dual-diagnosis groups and Charlotte County Mental Health services. The full list is on the programs page.

After arrest, people are booked at the Airport Road jail and see a judge at first appearance within 24 hours (Florida Rule 3.130). Charlotte County is in the Twentieth Judicial Circuit. To confirm someone is in custody and see their charges, use the sheriff’s local arrest database.

Florida’s constitution (Art. I, §14) entitles most defendants to reasonable pretrial release. It excludes capital and life felonies with evident proof, and situations where no conditions can protect the community. Minimum bonds used before first appearance come from the Florida Supreme Court’s 2026 statewide bond schedule (AOSC25-69). The Twentieth Circuit’s chief judge can require more, and the first appearance judge may go above or below the schedule. Some charges require a judge’s review first under §903.011, §903.046 and §907.041. Minor misdemeanors often end with a notice to appear. According to the sheriff’s inmate funds page, you can put money toward a bond through TouchPay: at the kiosk in the video visitation lobby, online at touchpaydirect.net, or by phone at (866) 232-1899 (facility locator 233901). Call the jail to confirm the exact process before you rely on it. A licensed bail bond agent is the other option. Under Florida Department of Financial Services guidance, the premium on a state bond is 10% of the bail and is earned once the person is released.

Charlotte offers both on-site and remote video visits through Smart Communications (smartinmate.com, (888) 253-5178), and inmates get two free one-hour visits a week. Visits must be booked at least 24 hours in advance, and a no-show gives up the slot. On-site sessions start at 12:30, 2, 3:30 and 5 p.m. on weekdays. Weekends add sessions at 7, 8:30 and 10 a.m. Visitors need a government photo ID. Only one adult visits at a time, though two adults may split an hour, and one minor may come with an adult. Swimwear, tank and halter tops, hats, bare midriffs and short shorts or skirts aren’t allowed. See the visitation page for the full rules.

Send general mail to CCSO-SCH, the inmate’s name and ID number, PO Box 2027, Pinellas Park, FL 33780. Every letter and postcard needs a complete return address or it will be destroyed. Legal mail goes to the jail at 26601 Airport Road. The inmate contact page has the details. Commissary deposits also go through TouchPay, and orders are capped at $70 a week.

The sheriff’s office has its own active warrants search. You can also check the FDLE statewide wanted persons list, but neither one is guaranteed to show every warrant. Charlotte County has no fixed-route buses. Its free Charlotte Rides service is curb-to-curb and runs weekdays and Saturdays. Book it through the app or at (941) 575-4000. Most visitors drive. The closest stops for gas and food are about a mile south at Jones Loop Road and I-75: Shell at 26520 Jones Loop Road, Murphy USA at 26359 Jones Loop Road, Burger King at 26500 Jones Loop Road and Culver’s at 26440 Jones Loop Road.
