The Leon County Detention Facility is Tallahassee’s county jail, run by the Leon County Sheriff’s Office at 535 Appleyard Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32304. The main number is (850) 606-3500. It opened in late 1993 with a rated capacity of 1,219 beds, and county planning documents show the average daily population has climbed well past 1,100 in recent years, most of them held on felony charges. The jail books people for every law enforcement agency in the county, so whether the arrest was made by a deputy, Tallahassee police, FSU or FAMU police, or state troopers, this is where the person is taken. Men and women are held here, both people awaiting trial and people serving county sentences of up to a year; anyone sentenced to more than a year is sent on to the Florida Department of Corrections.
If you are trying to find someone, start with the sheriff’s online inmate search. Anyone not released on bond sees a judge within 24 hours of arrest, as Florida Rule 3.130 requires. In Leon County, first appearance starts at 11:00 a.m. Monday through Friday and at 8:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays, in courtroom 2D of the Leon County Courthouse. Leon is part of Florida’s Second Judicial Circuit. Medical staff, including dentists and an obstetrician, work on site. Families with a health worry can leave a message on the medical line at (850) 606-3100 or the mental health line at (850) 606-3427. Classes, GED preparation, and reentry planning through the sheriff’s RISE Center are also available.
On bail: under Article I, Section 14 of the Florida Constitution, most people have a right to pretrial release on reasonable conditions. The exceptions are capital or life felonies where the proof is evident or the presumption great, and cases where no conditions can protect the community. For 2026, the Florida Supreme Court’s uniform statewide bond schedule (AOSC25-69) sets minimum amounts the jail uses before first appearance. The Second Circuit’s chief judge can set higher local amounts. The first appearance judge is not bound by the schedule, and some serious charges require seeing a judge before any release. People arrested for minor misdemeanors often get a notice to appear instead. For bond questions, call the releasing office at (850) 606-3526. You can pay a cash bond with a credit card, but you must bring the card and your ID to the releasing area in person. A licensed bail bond agent is the other option. The Florida Department of Financial Services says the premium on a state bond is 10% of the bail amount. A list of bondsmen is posted in the releasing lobby.
In-person visits are free and walk-in, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. (the last visits start at 4:00 and 7:00). Each visitor gets one 30-minute visit a day. Visitors must be 16 or older with valid ID. The dress code rules out underwire bras, halter tops, spaghetti straps, shorts or skirts above the knee, ripped jeans, see-through or body-fitted clothing, hats, and flip-flops. Paid video visits run through Securus. You can connect from home or go to the RISE Center or the Leroy Collins Leon County Public Library downtown, and children can join at the RISE Center with a parent. Personal letters don’t go to the jail. Address them with the person’s legal name and SPN number, c/o Securus Digital Mail Center – Leon County, PO Box 21947, Tampa, FL 33622-1947. Securus scans them onto the person’s tablet. Legal mail goes to PO Box 2278, Tallahassee, FL 32316. You can add money through JPay online or at (800) 574-5729, or at the cash-and-card kiosk in the jail lobby. The jail no longer takes deposits by mail or in the visitation lobby. Phones and tablets are provided by Securus, and calls to the Public Defender are free.
StarMetro buses stop on Appleyard Drive at the StarMetro offices next door. The Forest route (hourly) and the Live Oak route (every 45 minutes) both stop there on weekdays; check StarMetro route maps for weekend options. For warrants, Leon County has its own warrant search, which covers only first- and second-degree felony warrants. The FDLE wanted persons search covers the whole state, but not every warrant shows up in either one.
