Florida makes exceptions for capital and life felonies where the proof is evident, and for cases where no conditions would protect the community. Situated on a campus that includes the Wakulla County Jail, work release building, visitation building, visitation housing, the Sheriff’s Office and the Annex, the David F Harvey Criminal Justice Complex serves the community of Wakulla County by housing all inmates who have been arrested and charged with a felony or misdemeanor, both as they wait for their trial and as they serve their sentence.
The capacity of the building is now 350 inmates, both male and female, and it has a section for local inmates and a seperate section for immigration detainees. A contract provides medical services, another healthy meals, and staff meet all housing and security needs for each inmate and there are programs and classes keep inmates active and engaged.
Work release allows inmates who are currently employed and qualify for the program to maintain their jobs and return at the end of each day to continue their sentence, while the work camp has inmates working at lest one day a week doing tasks and projects that are not otherwise finished and earn time off their sentence for doing it. Work camp operates each morning and offenders are released each afternoon. Road crews are selected by the facility admin to help clean the sides of roads in the community and to work on recreational spaces.
The Wakulla County Detention Facility is at 15 Oak Street, Crawfordville, FL 32327, on the same site as the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office, which runs it. Call (850) 745-7100. The detention administrator’s office is at (850) 745-7152. The original jail opened in 1991 with room for 139 people. A 200-bed wing added in 2004 brought capacity to about 350. The jail has been accredited by the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission since 2002, with excelsior status in 2017 and 2020. It holds local men and women who are awaiting trial or serving county sentences, and it has also housed federal immigration detainees in a separate section under contract. Genesys Health Alliance provides medical care.
The jail runs more programs than you might expect for a rural facility. There’s adult basic education with GED classes and testing, and vocational skills and job placement help. Substance abuse counseling and weekly AA meetings are led by volunteers, and volunteer chaplains provide religious services. Sentenced inmates may qualify for work release, which lets them keep their jobs, or for the work camp and road crew that maintain county parks and roadsides.
People arrested anywhere in Wakulla County are booked here. Anyone still held after booking goes before a judge within 24 hours. Wakulla belongs to the Second Judicial Circuit. Florida’s Constitution guarantees most defendants reasonable pretrial release. The exceptions are capital or life felonies where guilt is evident, and cases where no condition protects the public. For 2026, a statewide bond schedule sets the minimum bond amounts the jail can apply before first appearance. Local judges can go higher, the first appearance judge can set their own terms, and certain charges need a judge’s review first. Minor misdemeanors often end in a notice to appear. The sheriff’s bond page gives two ways to post bond. You can bring a cashier’s check or money order for the full amount to the lobby, made payable to the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office, or you can use a licensed bail bond agent, who charges a 10% premium set by the state. The jail doesn’t accept cash, money orders, or personal checks sent in. Booking, daily subsistence, and medical fees come out of inmate accounts. Phone calls are collect, prepaid, or debit only.
The sheriff’s site shows that visits are done by video but doesn’t post the schedule, cost, or rules, so call (850) 745-7100 before planning a visit. There’s no online roster either, so call the same number to confirm someone is being held. For warrants, the FDLE wanted persons search is the statewide check, though it doesn’t include every warrant. No fixed-route bus runs to Crawfordville, so plan to drive. On Crawfordville Highway there’s a Sunoco at 2911 and a Shell at 2616, with Sonic Drive-In at 2859 and Dairy Queen at 75 Dogwood Dr.
