Located in Dalton, Georgia, the Elbert Shaw Regional Youth Detention Center is the regional short term facility for juveniles serving the counties of Catoosa, Dade, Fannin, Gilmer, Murray, Pickens, and Whitfield.
It has space for around 30 youth, and this includes not only juveniles waiting for their trial or their sentencing, but also youth who are young adults that were charged and are being sentenced through the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.
Only those who are charged as adults will be housed at the adult facility for the region. They will receive all needed medical and dental care, as well as support for mental health, treatment for any addictions or substance abuse concerns, and rehabilitation for other issues as well as behavioral therapy where needed. Life skills will develop through the discipline of following the strict routines, responsibility for actions is developed through the following of rules and the experience of the detention, and classwork is focused on with all needed adaptations or adjustments for potential learning difficulties.
Parenting and financial management classes are available, along with religious services for those who attend, group activities during free time, and many other learning opportunities.
The amount of mail received is not limited and youth may receive mail every day of the week, but it will be checked for content before being given to them. Postage is provided each week for two letters to be sent out of the facility, but more can be accessed if the postage is provided by the family.

Visitation: Visitors are approved by the court or the probation officer, and only those who are on the students approved visiting list will be permitted to visit, and they will receive the details of their visits from the staff.
