What bond does a common charge carry?

Iowa's uniform bond schedule covers most arrests before a judge steps in. It lists $300 for a simple misdemeanor, $1,000 for a serious one and $2,000 for an aggravated one. Felony bonds start at $5,000 for class D and rise to $10,000 for class C and $25,000 for class B. Every count is added separately.

Who has to see a magistrate before release?

A few charges rule out the printed amounts. Anyone held on a forcible felony, a domestic abuse assault, or a broken protective or no-contact order stays put until the magistrate rules. That also applies to stalking, to sexual abuse in any of its three degrees, to producing or delivering meth or keeping it to deliver, to dangerous-weapon intimidation, and to felons carrying guns. The judge in the Second Judicial District then looks at the offense, the person's history, job and family ties and whether the person is a danger before setting terms.

Ways to post bond

  • Full cash, which comes back after the case if every hearing was attended.
  • A bail bond from a licensed agent backed by an insurer. Iowa permits no other paid surety, and the agent keeps the premium.
  • Iowa property, pledged through the clerk's office.

Ask the jail at 641-257-6217 where and how to pay, especially at night or on a weekend.

Senate File 2399 and Floyd County

Since July 1, 2026, the promise-only release has been reserved for misdemeanors at the simple or serious level, and never for a case with drugs or violence in it. Any bail a judge sets below the schedule now needs written reasons. The current amounts still stand. The Judicial Council has a July 1, 2027 deadline to give the Supreme Court a revised schedule adjusted for inflation.

Where is the Clerk of Court?

The Clerk of District Court is in Suite 403 of the courthouse, 101 South Main Street, Charles City, IA 50616. The number is 641-228-7777 and the email is countyclerk.floyd@iowacourts.gov. The office handles bond paperwork and court files on weekdays. It cannot give legal advice.

↑ Back to the question list

What if the defendant misses court?

Not showing up tends to mean a bench warrant, and Floyd County can keep the bond. A surety then gets 30 days from notice under Iowa Code 811.6 to deliver the defendant or pay. The no-show is chargeable too, under 811.2(8). On a felony file that charge is a class D felony; for misdemeanors it drops to a serious misdemeanor.

↑ Back to the question list

When do I get the cash back?

After the final hearing, the clerk sends the bond back to the person who paid it in, if the defendant came to court as required. A judge can order fines, costs or restitution held back first. For leftover jail account money, see our money guide.

Federal cases and ICE

A federal arrest here is filed in Cedar Rapids, home of the Eastern Division clerk for the Northern District of Iowa: 111 7th Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401, 319-286-2300. On a federal charge, only a federal magistrate can grant release. State law, Iowa Code chapter 27A, makes the jail keep people on ICE detainers. The ICE locator tracks immigration moves.

↑ Back to the question list

Does bond apply if the arrested person is 15?

No. Charles City youths needing a locked placement are sent to the Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center, 2317 Rick Collins Way, Eldora, IA 50627, 641-858-3852. A judge decides whether the child stays at a hearing held within 1 working day.

How do I learn my daughter's bail after a Rockford arrest?

Ask the jail at 641-257-6217; once the order is filed, the clerk in Suite 403 (641-228-7777) can read it to you too.

Can we still pay ten percent in Charles City?

That ended with the 2026 bail law. Under SF 2399 a Floyd County defendant's people must cover every dollar the magistrate sets, unless an 811.3 surety signs.

Can my parents pledge their Marble Rock farm?

Iowa Code 811.3 lets an Iowa owner pledge Iowa real estate worth at least the bail; the clerk explains the paperwork.

Conditions After Release From the Charles City Jail

  • The release order travels home with the defendant. Whatever conditions the Charles City magistrate attaches under 811.2 bind the person until Judge Moore's district changes them or the file is closed.
  • If the defendant is a no-show upstairs. A no-show lets the judge declare the money forfeited under section 811.7, and Sheriff Crooks's office then holds a fresh arrest warrant.
  • Who picks the court dates. Kelly Heard books Charles City hearings for the Second District (641-494-3612); each setting then shows on the state docket site.
  • When a cosigner can walk away. Bringing the accused back to the LEC jail desk before a forfeiture order lets the guarantor off the hook, per 811.8.

A defendant who also owes a court date in Mason City or Osage can look up that courthouse in the Iowa Judicial Branch listing of offices.
