Graham County Jail Inmate Search, Mugshots and Visiting Rules

For a Graham County, Kansas inmate search, call the jail; no online roster or mugshots are posted. The Hill City jail has 14 beds and also holds prisoners for other counties under contract, so an inmate there may not be from Graham County at all. To check custody, call the jail at 785-421-2107 or use VINELink: pick Kansas, enter a name, and see the holding facility and status, with release alerts available to anyone. The Kansas VINE phone line is 866-574-8463. Look up charges on Kansas CaseSearch.

1. Where is the jail?

2. When can I visit?

Per the county's jail page, visits are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Restrictions:

  • no visitors under 18;
  • no one currently on probation, parole or bond;
  • no victims of the inmate's alleged crime.

The one-hour window is short, so arrive a few minutes early with photo ID, and call 785-421-2107 the same morning, since court dates, lockdowns or a transfer can cancel a visit. A prisoner held here for another county follows the same schedule. Our visitation page has general tips.

3. Can I send money or packages?

Money must be sent as a money order; the jail does not take packages. Letters go to the inmate's full name, Graham County Jail, 410 N. Pomeroy, Hill City, KS 67642, with a return address on the envelope. A boarded prisoner from another county still gets mail at this Hill City address while held here, but money for that person's bond or fines may need to go through the sending county, so ask staff at 785-421-2107 first. See our money guide and commissary guide. For calls, messages and letters, see our phone page, messaging page and mail page.

4. How is bail handled?

Bond is set at an early court hearing that K.S.A. 22-2901 requires without unnecessary delay, and it is posted at the Hill City jail, 785-421-2107. Because the 14-bed jail also boards other counties' prisoners under contract, confirm which county's court set the bond before paying. Case details are on Kansas CaseSearch. Defendants short of money may request court-appointed counsel paid by the State Board of Indigents' Defense Services, 785-296-6631. Our bail page lists types and steps, and our court page covers the court side.

5. Is there a warrant waiting in Hill City?

The Graham County Sheriff's Office in Hill City serves warrants, and deputies will check a name at 785-421-2107. Kansas has never offered a statewide warrant search; Hill City's court cases and any bench warrant can be found on Kansas CaseSearch. Clearing a warrant generally means turning yourself in at the Graham County Jail, ideally after a lawyer has called ahead. For a missed hearing, Hill City's district court clerk, in Suite 9 at 410 N. Pomeroy Ave., answers at 785-421-3458.

  2. Detention is decided.
  3. Held defendants are placed in a contract jail by the U.S. Marshals Service in Topeka, 785-596-9470.

8. How does an ICE hold work in Hill City?

  1. ICE sends the jail a Form I-247A detainer.
  2. Making bail on the local case keeps the detainer active.
  3. Hill City staff can hold the person "up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released" (8 CFR 287.7(d)), and must release if ICE does not appear.
  4. ICE's Chicago Field Office handles Kansas, 872-351-3990.
  5. Search the ICE detainee locator or call 888-351-4024.

9. How do I find a state prisoner?

A sentence of more than a year usually means transfer from Hill City to the Kansas Department of Corrections, which intakes men at El Dorado and women at Topeka. Search by name or KDOC number on KASPER to see the current facility and sentence details, then open our prisons list for that prison's address, visiting rules and phone. Transfers can take days to show, so a person sentenced this week may still appear at the county jail.

10. Which courts handle Graham County cases?

The 17th Judicial District holds court in the Hill City courthouse, which also houses the sheriff and the jail, so a prisoner reaches custody hearings without a transport; the clerk is 785-421-3458. Felony and county misdemeanor cases are heard there; look them up by name on Kansas CaseSearch. Hill City Municipal Court, 205 N. Pomeroy Ave., 785-421-3638, takes Hill City police tickets and city ordinance cases. Bogue and Morland cases written by deputies go to district court.

11. How do I set up VINELink alerts?

On VINELink, choose Kansas, type the person's name and open the record. Register with a phone number or email, and VINE contacts you when the person is released, transferred or escapes. The service is free and anonymous; the person in custody is not told. Because the Hill City jail boards other counties' prisoners, a VINE record may list a different county's sheriff as the holding agency.

12. What if a minor is arrested?

Youths are separated from adult prisoners. Juvenile intake reviews the case, and a court-ordered detention means placement at a regional youth center. Call 785-421-2107 for information.

13. How soon must a defendant held in Hill City go to trial?

The district court in the courthouse at 410 N. Pomeroy (785-421-3458) sets trials; the jail upstairs from it, reached at 785-421-2107, holds the defendant meanwhile. A person jailed on that charge alone is entitled to trial within 150 days of arraignment, and a person on bond within 180, under K.S.A. 22-3402. Delays requested by the defense pause the count.

↑ Back to the question list

14. Who pays for an appointed lawyer on a Graham case?

The Board of Indigents' Defense Services pays the attorney, but the defendant owes a $100 application fee to the district clerk at 785-421-3458 under K.S.A. 22-4529. A judge may waive it for hardship. A dismissal or an acquittal earns the defendant that $100 back from the clerk.

15. Do Hill City jail nights come off the sentence?

They do. A Graham judge on North Pomeroy (785-421-3458) backdates the sentence for every night spent in custody, under K.S.A. 21-6615. The jail at 785-421-2107 keeps the booking dates.
