Sedgwick County Juvenile Detention Facility Inmate Search
Sedgwick County Inmate Search and Jail Guide
The sheriff's online inmate search (the jail roster) lists everyone currently held at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility, 141 W. Elm, Wichita, KS 67203, and its annex; the jail answers around the clock at 316-660-5245. Each record shows booking details, every charge with its own bond and the case it belongs to. Mugshots are not promised on the search page; ask Sheriff Records about booking photos. New arrests show only after booking finishes; if the name is missing, phone the jail.

How do I read a roster entry?
Type the name and open the record. Charges sit on separate lines, each with its own bond, so add them for the total. A $0.00 line can mean no bond was allowed, a sentence is being served, or several charges share one case number. If a name drops off, the person was likely released, transferred or sent to prison; Kansas CaseSearch will show what happened in the case.
↑ Back to the question listCan I get an alert when they are released?
Yes. Register the name on VINELink, the state's free notification service, and pick how you want to hear about a release or move. VINE also confirms which agency holds someone if the county search comes up empty.
↑ Back to the question listHow fast can they get out?
It depends on the bond the judge set: cash, own recognizance or professional surety. Impaired drivers may wait up to four hours for a sober ride, and domestic arrests wait out a cooling-off period. Property bagged at booking is returned at release. Our bail guide walks through each step.
↑ Back to the question listChecking for a warrant in Wichita and Sedgwick County
Here in Wichita, warrants are served by deputies from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, often with help from Wichita police. The sheriff posts an online warrant search that's a good first stop, and if you'd rather talk to a person, the warrants office picks up at 316-660-3960. Kansas itself has no statewide warrant search, but Wichita's district court cases are open to anyone on Kansas CaseSearch, where a bench warrant shows as part of the case. The calmest way to clear a Sedgwick warrant is to let a defense lawyer set up a surrender at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility, 141 W. Elm St., downtown, rather than waiting to be stopped. If it all started with a skipped hearing, the district court clerk at 525 N. Main in Wichita can explain how to get back on the calendar; call 316-660-5801.
↑ Back to the question listHow do phone calls and messages work?
Inmates call out only; calls are prepaid or collect and recorded. U.S. calls cost 1.5 cents a minute, and each person gets two free calls and two free messages a week; emails and photos cost 5 cents each. For a true family emergency, call 316-660-5245 and a supervisor passes the word. See our phone page and email and text page.
↑ Back to the question listHow do visits work at 141 W. Elm?
All visits are by video and must be booked 24 hours ahead. Each inmate gets one free on-site hour a week, Monday through Friday 1 to 5:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Remote visits run daily 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 11 cents a minute, except shift change (2:30 to 3:30 p.m.) and meals; new remote users are approved on weekdays only.
↑ Back to the question listWhat ID and dress rules apply to visitors?
Bring a government photo ID. Children 12 and up need a school ID or birth certificate, and anyone under 18 must come with an adult. No bare shoulders, see-through clothing or short shorts. More on our visitation page.
↑ Back to the question listWhere do I send letters?
Personal letters and photos are scanned and shown on a screen. Address them with the full name and inmate number to: Sedgwick County Adult Detention KS, P.O. Box 16120, Jonesboro, AR 72401. Use a return address, one inmate per envelope, and no cards, glue or packages. Never mail cash or money orders. See our mail page.
↑ Back to the question listWhere do legal mail and books go?
Legal mail and paperback books shipped straight from a publisher (two a week) go to the inmate at 141 W. Elm, Wichita, KS 67203, not to the scanning address.
↑ Back to the question listHow do I put money on their account?
Deposits for snacks, hygiene items and calls go through the jail's online deposit service. Our deposit guide gives the steps and the commissary page shows what can be bought.
↑ Back to the question listHow do they get a lawyer?
Defendants without the means to hire counsel say so at the first hearing. If not, the Sedgwick County Public Defender Office, 604 N. Main, Suite D, Wichita, KS 67203 (316-264-8700) is appointed, or the Conflicts Office (316-267-1847) when there is a conflict.
↑ Back to the question listWhen can attorneys visit?
Professional visiting runs Monday to Thursday 8 to 11 a.m., 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 10 p.m. Kansas law also guarantees attorney access "at all reasonable hours" (K.S.A. 19-1930).
↑ Back to the question listWhich court has the case?
- 18th Judicial District Court, Sedgwick County Courthouse, 525 N. Main, 7th floor (criminal clerk), Wichita, KS 67203; 316-660-5900. - City ordinance cases go to the municipal court where the arrest happened; Wichita's is at City Hall, 455 N. Main. See our Sedgwick County court page.
↑ Back to the question listWhat happens at the first appearance?
Most first hearings are held on a video link to the Elm Street jail, where the person hears the charges, gets a bond decision and can ask for counsel; Kansas requires this "without unnecessary delay" (K.S.A. 22-2901).
↑ Back to the question listWhat if they are hurt, sick or in crisis?
Tell staff right away. For mental health worries, thoughts of self-harm or deep distress, call 316-660-5245, press 1, then 1, then 4 to reach a supervisor. Family death notices are delivered by the chaplain after the facts are checked.
↑ Back to the question listCan I get a booking photo or mugshot?
Ask Sheriff Records at 316-660-3888 what can be released; reporters go through the Public Information Officer at 316-660-3861. Kansas open-records law lets agencies withhold some criminal investigation records (K.S.A. 45-221). ICE photos are requested through ICE FOIA.
↑ Back to the question listIs it a federal case?
- Federal agents or the U.S. Marshals bring the person to the Elm Street jail, which holds them for the Marshals; they still show on the county search.
- They appear before a U.S. magistrate judge at the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, Wichita division, 401 N. Market, Room 204, Wichita, KS 67202; clerk 316-315-4200.
- A detention hearing decides release or custody.
- U.S. Marshals Service, Wichita: 316-765-6339.
- After sentencing, use the BOP inmate locator.
What if ICE puts a hold on them?
- ICE sends the jail a Form I-247A detainer.
- A paid county bond leaves the detainer standing.
- Custody may then continue "up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released" (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
- Kansas cases are handled from Chicago: 872-351-3990.
- Search the ICE detainee locator with the A-number and country of birth.
How do I find them after a prison sentence?
Sentenced prisoners go to a Kansas Department of Corrections reception center for testing and classification before assignment. Track them on KASPER and our Kansas prisons page.
↑ Back to the question listWhat if the person arrested is under 18?
Minors never go to the adult jail. They start at the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center, 700 S. Hydraulic, Wichita, KS 67211 (316-660-5350). Those who must stay locked up go to the Juvenile Detention Facility at the same address (316-660-9750); longer placements go to the Juvenile Residential Facility, 881 S. Minnesota, Wichita, KS 67211 (316-660-9775). Cases are heard at the Juvenile Courthouse, 1900 E. Morris.
↑ Back to the question listWho handles sex offender registration?
Registration is done by the sheriff's office (K.S.A. 22-4902); people who must register have three business days after they arrive, start a job or begin classes in Sedgwick County (K.S.A. 22-4905). The public list is the KBI offender registry.
