Housing all juveniles who are arrested, charged, or adjudicated to the facility for the county and surrounding areas, the St. Louis County Juvenile Detention Center is to be a short term holding facility for youth who are under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court. They may be detained if they are considered to be a threat to themselves or to someone else, or if they have failed to appear at court hearings previously. The purpose of the facility is to provide a safe and secure environment for the youth, the staff, and any visitors, while also providing education, food and nutrition, medical and dental care, support for mental health, all their basic care and requirements, and opportunities to socialize with other youth and to improve social skills. Psychiatric care is provided for those who require it, with a mental health therapist and counselors who are onsite up to 40 hours each week. School is provided through the local school district and all teachers are licensed and trained to provide not only basic education but advanced topics and to adjust to all special needs or adaptations for the classroom. Mail: Juveniles may send and receive mail each weekday, as it comes via the postal system. Time and supplies are provided for writing letters. Phones: 10 minute phone calls are provided every other day, and they may call a parent, guardian, or caretaker, who are also able to call the facility to speak to their youth as often as three times each week during calling hours. Visitation: 3 visits each week are permitted for parents or guardians and can be scheduled by calling the control desk at 314-615-2996.
