Deer Lodge County Inmate Search at the Anaconda Jail

Adults arrested anywhere in Anaconda-Deer Lodge County by local officers or state troopers are normally booked into the county detention center, 800 S Oak Street, Anaconda, MT 59711. This page helps you find them, see the charges and learn how custody works from booking to release.

The jail belongs to the ADLC Law Enforcement Department, not a sheriff. Its daily jail roster is a PDF with the time it was made printed at the top, so a very new booking may not be on it yet.

Phone 406-563-5241 at any hour if the arrest just happened or the person seems to be gone. Ask whether Oak Street still holds them, the bond amount and when the next hearing falls. Release is laid out on our bail page, and hearings at the Anaconda courthouse on our court page.

1. What is the best way to use the Deer Lodge County jail roster?

The detention center had 32 beds in a 2022 state report, so the list fits on a few pages. To use it:

  1. Tap the roster link. A PDF titled "Facility Roster - Detailed Info" opens.
  2. Check the stamp at the top to see when it was printed.
  3. Search the last name with the find tool on your phone or computer.
  4. Read the whole entry. It gives the name, booking number, race, sex, birth date, cell, booking date, an "Authority" number, a bond amount and an agency or holding code. The charges are written out in plain words underneath.
  5. Jot down the booking number. Staff can pull up the record faster with it.

If a code or amount is confusing, the staff at 406-563-5241 can explain it.

2. Why is their name missing from the list?

  • Booked after the list was made. The PDF is a snapshot taken at one moment.
  • Gone home. Bail may have been posted, or a judge may have let them go.
  • Moved. They could be at another jail, a state program or in federal custody.
  • Wrong county. An arrest in the town of Deer Lodge goes to Powell County.
  • Spelling. Try a nickname, a middle name or an old last name.
  • Under 18. Youths are kept out of the adult housing.

To be sure, call the jail at 406-563-5241. Staff will want the full name and the birth date.

↑ Back to the question list

3. Could they be in Powell County or the state prison instead?

Yes, if they were picked up in or near the town that shares this county's name. That town is the seat of Powell County, a separate county with its own sheriff and jail.

  • Powell County Detention Facility, run by the Powell County Sheriff's Office at 313 4th Street, Deer Lodge, MT 59722. Inmate money orders go to that address.
  • Montana State Prison, 400 Conley Lake Road, Deer Lodge, MT 59722, 406-415-6126. State prisoners are found on the offender search, not on the ADLC roster.

4. Which nearby jails should I also check?

The county houses its own adults in Anaconda. If the arrest was close to a county line, these jails are worth a call too:

5. Are mugshots from the Anaconda jail public?

The daily roster is text only. Still, Montana law says jail rosters, bail records and booking photos are all public criminal justice information (MCA 44-5-103). The law puts no limits on sharing that kind of information (MCA 44-5-301).

For a copy of a mugshot, phone the Law Enforcement Department at 406-563-5241 and ask how to make a records request. For a photo taken in immigration custody, ask ICE through its records request page.

6. How will I know when they are released?

For a person in the county jail, the best plan is to check the roster each morning and call 406-563-5241 with questions.

  • VINE is a free service that sends calls, texts or emails. Montana uses it for adult felons the state corrections agency supervises, for example those in prison or on parole. You have to sign up yourself, on VINELink or at 800-456-3076.
  • Victims of some crimes must get word from the jail soon after the accused posts bail. This covers partner assault, choking a partner, stalking and breaking a protection order (MCA 46-9-108).
↑ Back to the question list

7. How do they get out on bail?

Release is decided at the first hearing, which is usually in Justice Court, 800 South Main Street, Anaconda, MT 59711, 406-563-4025. Montana still allows money bail, but judges must use the lightest terms that will work.

  • The roster lists a bond amount next to each name. Ask the jail what it covers.
  • For many misdemeanors, a state list suggests an amount.
  • For felonies, the judge sets the figure.
  • Anyone charged with assaulting a partner or relative must see a judge before release.
  • A person held for another county or state can't be bailed out by a local judge.

Our guide to bail goes through amounts, payment and bail agents.

8. How do I learn the exact charges?

Each charge is spelled out in plain words under the person's name on the roster. To read the law behind it, search the free Montana Code Annotated.

When the case is filed, the court file gives the formal charge. Look on the limited court portal for misdemeanors, or on the District Court portal for felonies. Final charging choices are made by the County Attorney's Office, 800 South Main Street, Anaconda, MT 59711 (first floor), 406-563-4019.

9. Can I look up someone's past criminal record?

Montana's Department of Justice sells name searches through its background check page. The online search, called CHOPRS, costs $20.00 per record and needs the person's complete name and complete birth date. A mailed name search costs $15.00.

Court files are free on the state portals. The Justice Court also keeps a records check request form for its own files. Ask the court clerk at 406-563-4025 how to turn it in.

↑ Back to the question list

10. How does someone in the ADLC jail get a free lawyer?

A judge must tell the person about their right to counsel when they first appear. If the cost of a lawyer is out of reach, the person can ask the court for a public defender. Montana's free defense office has a branch in town:

Families can also hire a private attorney. Ask the jail at 406-563-5241 how lawyer meetings are set up.

11. How do jail visits work in Deer Lodge County?

Phone the detention center at 406-563-5241 before you make the trip. Questions to ask:

  • On what days, and at what times, can I visit?
  • Are visits face to face, by video, or both?
  • How far ahead do I have to sign up?
  • What ID do I need, and can children come?
  • What clothing and items are not allowed?

Our visiting guide has tips for a first visit.

↑ Back to the question list

12. How do I put money on their commissary account?

The jail uses an online commissary website, which the department links on its page. Its rules:

  • All commissary orders, website buys included, share a $75.00 limit.
  • Orders close Tuesday night, and items arrive every Friday.

For other ways to add funds, call 406-563-5241 with the person's name and booking number. Never mail cash. Our money guide explains deposit options, and the commissary guide shows what the funds can buy.

↑ Back to the question list

13. How do the jail phones and texters work?

Each person held in the jail is issued a texter/phone. Family members add money for calls and texts through the Reliance Telephone website. Phone time can also be bought with commissary funds.

Ask the jail at 406-563-5241 about prices, hours and whether calls are recorded. Talking about the case is best left for the lawyer, not the phone. See our phone guide and our guide to inmate messages.

↑ Back to the question list

14. What is the right way to mail a letter to the jail?

Call 406-563-5241 before you mail anything. Ask whether letters should go to the street address, 800 S Oak Street, Anaconda, MT 59711, or to the department's box, P.O. Box 518, Anaconda, MT 59711. Ask too if the booking number belongs on the envelope, and which items, like photos or books, are allowed.

On the envelope, print the person's complete legal name and your own return address. Cash never goes in the mail. Our mail guide lists common rules.

↑ Back to the question list

15. How are their belongings picked up?

The jail stores the items a person brought in at booking until release. Call 406-563-5241 to arrange pickup. Find out if the person needs to sign anything first, and carry a photo ID when you go to 800 S Oak Street, Anaconda, MT 59711.

Commissary that is delivered after someone leaves must be claimed within one week. If no one claims it, the department treats it as abandoned property.

16. What if they are sick or need medicine?

Call the detention center at 406-563-5241 as soon as you can. Tell staff the drug names and doses, plus the prescribing doctor and their phone number. If it is an emergency, dial 911.

If you are worried about their mental health, say so clearly on the call. Western Montana Mental Health Center has an Anaconda office at 307 E Park Ave., Anaconda, MT 59711, 406-563-3413. Family members who need support can reach the Pintler Suicide Awareness and Prevention hotline any time at 406-691-0332.

17. Is there a warrant out in Deer Lodge County?

Warrant questions anywhere in the city-county are answered by one office, the ADLC Law Enforcement Department, at 406-563-5241. Free court portals list open cases: one for Justice and city courts, another for District Court. The state offender search flags escapees and people who left probation or parole as wanted by corrections. A lawyer should be your first call before you handle a warrant. After that, the person can surrender at 800 S Oak Street, Anaconda, MT 59711. Felony warrants run through the Clerk of District Court, 406-563-4040.

↑ Back to the question list

18. How do I find out their next court date?

Ask the court handling the case:

  • Justice Court (city cases too), 800 South Main Street, Anaconda, MT 59711, 406-563-4025
  • Clerk of District Court, second floor of the same courthouse, 406-563-4040. Law and Motion day is Wednesday.

Both state portals can be searched by name, too. For a walk-through of each stage, read our court page.

19. How do federal arrests from the county work?

Federal arrests from the county go to Butte. The courthouse there is the Mike Mansfield Federal Courthouse, 400 N. Main Street, Suite 273, Butte, MT 59701, 406-497-1279.

  1. At the first federal hearing, a judge rules on detention, meaning jail or home until trial (18 U.S.C. 3142).
  2. Before trial, federal marshals keep custody. Call the U.S. Marshals Service's Montana line at 406-200-6004 to learn which jail is holding them.
  3. Case papers are on PACER.
  4. Once sentenced, look them up on the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.
↑ Back to the question list

20. Can ICE hold them after they would be released?

  1. A detainer arrives at the jail from ICE on Form I-247A.
  2. The jail may then hold them for up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released. Montana officers must honor the detainer unless shown solid proof of citizenship or lawful status (MCA 27-16-801).
  3. ICE then takes the person to a location chosen by the Salt Lake City Field Office, 2975 Decker Lake Drive, Suite 100, West Valley City, UT 84119, 801-736-1200.
  4. Try the ICE Online Detainee Locator. Searching takes either the A-number or the person's exact name together with their birth country. When no result comes back, ICE advises calling the field office.

21. How do I find someone sent to prison from Deer Lodge County?

After a state prison sentence, the person usually remains in the Anaconda jail for a while, waiting on a Department of Corrections assessment. They may show up on the state search even before they move.

  • The Montana offender search shows where a person is and their status. You can search with a name or a state ID number.
  • Our Montana prisons guide lists visiting rules and mailing addresses for each prison.
  • Parole and probation questions can go to the state office at 122 E Park, Anaconda, MT 59711, 406-563-2560.
↑ Back to the question list

22. What if someone under 18 is arrested in Deer Lodge County?

Anyone under 18 is housed apart from adults. Youth Court handles their cases, and those files are left off the public court portals. If a youth is detained, a probable cause hearing has to happen within 24 hours, skipping weekends and holidays (MCA 41-5-332). To find out where the youth is held and what the next step is, call Juvenile Probation at 406-563-4030.
