Ontario County Jail

Need information about an inmate? Call the 276-bed Ontario County Jail at 585-396-1800 any time, day or night, or look them up with the inmate search tool.

This jail is where people arrested in the county for misdemeanors and felonies are taken for booking and processing. Some are released after posting bond or on their own recognizance. Others are held until their trial is decided.

If convicted and sentenced to less than a year, an inmate serves the time here. A sentence longer than a year means a transfer to the New York State Prison System or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Use this page to find the visitation schedule and policies, send money to an inmate, write a letter, set up inmate phone calls and voicemail, email or text, rent a tablet, post a bail bond, or buy commissary.

Save the booking number or jail ID once you have it, as it’s required for most correspondence. If the online roster doesn’t show it, call Ontario County Jail at 585-396-1800.

Inmate Bail and Bonding

How to handle bail after an arrest in Ontario County

If someone has been booked at Ontario County Jail in Canandaigua, their next steps may include:

1. Release without posting bail, provided they agree to attend court.
2. Detainment until their trial.
3. Posting bail or bond to secure release. For the exact amount, call 585-396-1800.

There are a variety of payment methods available for bail.

  • The usual way to post a cash bond is to pay the full amount at the jail bonding window or the clerk of court by cash, cashier's check or money order; many jails also offer card payment through a lobby kiosk or online bond vendor for a fee, and you should bring the inmate's full name and booking number (call 585-396-1800 for the jail).
  • Assistance is available from licensed bail bond companies in Ontario County.
  • Real property bonds are accepted in many courts: an owner may offer land or a home after showing clear title and equity of at least the bond, often double, with a deed and a recent tax or appraisal value, and the court that set bail approves it.
