Multnomah County Juvenile Detention Center
The Multnomah County Juvenile Detention Center, named the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Home, houses the juveniles who are determined to require detention only if the offense is serious enough, if they have an ongoing history of criminal offenses, if they have previously failed to attend court dates, or if they are providing a threat to others or a danger to themselves. The Multnomah Education Service District provides an education within the facility for all detained youth and works toward keeping a positive environment in the space. All areas of the building are monitored for safety, inspections occur every hour, the full day is structured and full of routines and schedules, and all youth are escorted to new locations throughout the building. Programs are in place that include spiritual support, peer support groups, library services for both educational purposes and recreational reading, and all necessary health care. This facility works with youth who are 12-17 years of age, holding daily groups that help to develop necessary life skills. Problem solving, empathy, appropriate expression of anger, and determining errors within their own thinking are all addressed during any length of detention.
