⇓ Learn more ⇓ Show lessBy March of 2025, the Aiken County Detention Center will have completed their latest expansion project and have a new rated capacity of 450 beds. The facility has been experiencing overcrowding for several years, with the avaerage of inmates on any given day being 407. The jail, which was first built in June of 2002, is rated for only 317 inmates. Four new housing units; two for men and two for women, are being built at a cost to the county of $13.5 million.
The problem that the Aiken County Detention Center is having is that the population is growing faster than they can get staff to safely monitor the inmates. Even with releasing less dnagerous inmates to their homes, monitoring them with GPS ankle bracelets, has not been an adequate way to handle the overcrowding. In addition, because of gangs, there needs to attention paid to keeping them separated in different sections. This also creates a need for a larger area. Closely monitoring them is a job that never ends.
To keep up, only those who are pretrial or in trial, or who are serving less than 90 days will remain at this facility with those who are serving longer sentences being transferred to other, larger, facilities. There are 81 employees at the center, and they ensure that inmates are safe, have access to all their needs, and help to prevent any safety or security concerns.

Emailing Messages & Photos
Facility_name_1} contracts with Viapath/GTL/GettingOut, the same service that handles iInmate Phone Systems and Video Visitation, for sending secure messages and photos between you and your inmate.
If you are not already registered, do so here, or Log in.
Then use the Facility Finder to:
1. Select Aiken County Detention Center,
2. Add your inmate to your list of contacts,
3. Add a credit or debit card to cover your costs.
- Messages can be up to 500 characters long, including punctuation. At the bottom of your message there is a 'character countdown' feature.
- After you click the “CONTINUE” button, you can review the cost to send your message to your inmate. You can also attach credits for your inmate to reply to your message. Be sure to accept the Terms and Conditions and click the “SEND” button for your message to be successfully delivered to your inmate.
- You can also send your Aiken County inmate photos and videos.

The devices are similar to common handheld tablets, but are made exclusively by GettingOut, a GTL / Viapath company.
Tablets offer specialized content and services for inmates to use during their stay at Aiken County Detention Center, such as:

- Video visits
- Free services are already available for use on the device at Aiken County Detention Center.

How Inmates Can Use a Tablet to Access Services at Aiken County Detention Center
