Fairfield County Detention Center Inmate Search
Fairfield County Inmate Search: Locating Someone at the Faith Lane Jail
After an arrest anywhere in Fairfield, adults are taken to the Fairfield County Detention Center, 10 Faith Lane, Winnsboro, SC 29180. The county runs it as a department under a director, apart from the Sheriff's Office. Below you'll find how to confirm a booking, plus charges, lawyers, visiting, letters, deposits, property, warrants and hearings.
Search Fairfield's official inmate lookup by last name, then first name. Online records can trail behind real life, so the newest Faith Lane bookings and releases may lag a little. Jail staff always have the freshest answer.
Call Central Control at 803-635-4841, which answers for the Detention Center. Have their legal name plus birth date handy; staff can share charges, bond and the hearing date. Getting them out is explained on our bail page; the case itself, hearing by hearing, on our court page.
1. First step to locate a Fairfield County inmate?
Work through this list to find a person held on Faith Lane:
- In the official inmate lookup, try the surname alone first.
- Long list? Add the first name.
- Still nothing? Fairfield staff suggest checking spellings: try a nickname, a maiden name, or each part of a double surname alone.
- Note any booking number shown; Central Control finds records quicker that way.
- Phone the jail at 803-635-4841 to make sure the person hasn't left and to ask about bond.
Office staff work weekdays, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. At night and on weekends, that same Central Control number still connects to the jail.
↑ Back to the question list2. Why might a Fairfield search come up empty?
Common reasons a Fairfield name is missing:
- Booking hasn't finished. Prints, photos and forms eat up hours. Booking has a separate line, 803-815-4093.
- Bond was already posted. Some people walk out the same day as their hearing.
- Another county made the arrest. A traffic stop past the county line ends at that county's jail.
- Federal or state custody. Marshals, ICE and state prisons each run separate records.
- A minor was arrested. Teens go to juvenile detention instead.
For a straight answer, dial Central Control at 803-635-4841. One more tip: the state probation office down the road at 100 Faith Lane, Winnsboro, SC 29180 is not the jail.
↑ Back to the question list3. Might a neighbor of Fairfield County have them?
Fairfield keeps its own adults in one building, the Detention Center on Faith Lane. Arrests just past the line, and holds for other counties, can put someone in a neighboring lockup:
- Chester County Detention Center, 2740 Dawson Drive, Chester, SC 29706, 803-581-2602
- Lancaster County Detention Center, 1941 Pageland Hwy., Lancaster, SC 29720, 803-283-2084
- Kershaw County Detention Center, 101 Bramblewood Plantation Road, Camden, SC 29020, 803-425-1516
- Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (Richland), 201 John Mark Dial Dr., Columbia, SC 29209, 803-576-3200
- Newberry County Detention Center, 3239 Louis Rich Drive, Newberry, SC 29108, 803-321-2141
- Union County Detention Center, 1657 Jonesville Highway, Union, SC 29379, 864-429-2818
Fairfield's own jail lists a second main office number too: 803-635-2013.
↑ Back to the question list4. Can I see a Fairfield County booking photo?
Use the online lookup to locate a person; for a booking photo, check with the Detention Center at 803-635-4841. South Carolina's records law treats lists of people jailed in the last three months as public (S.C. Code 30-4-30(D)(3)). Agencies have 10 business days to answer a written request (S.C. Code 30-4-30(C)).
- Cleared of the charge? Since 2016, a certified letter to any website showing your mugshot starts a 30-day clock for its free removal (S.C. Code 17-1-60).
- Immigration mugshots: use the ICE records request page to ask for one.
- Booking photos from federal agencies rarely go public, though Marshals may share one in a manhunt.
5. Release or transfer from Faith Lane: is there an alert?
Daily calls to Central Control at 803-635-4841 are the most reliable way to follow someone on Faith Lane.
- SC VINE, a free statewide service, displays where a person is held and whether they're in custody. It can also ping you by call, text or email after a change. Look someone up or enroll on VINELink South Carolina, or dial 866-727-2846 (English or Spanish). You must enroll yourself.
- Crime victims are entitled to hear when the accused is caught, let out or escapes (S.C. Const. art. I, § 24). A victim advocate works out of the Sheriff's Office, 803-635-4141.
- Once someone reaches state prison, Corrections' victim services staff take questions at 803-896-1733.
6. How does bond work after a Fairfield arrest?
A magistrate or town judge must give the person a bond hearing inside a day of the arrest (S.C. Code 22-5-510). Fairfield runs these twice daily, all week. The hour and place depend on who made the arrest, so check with the Magistrate's Office at 803-635-4525.
- Short of a capital charge, the default is release on a written promise, unless the judge sees a danger or a chance they'll run (S.C. Code 17-15-10).
- The judge may instead set full cash, a surety bond through a bondsman, GPS, or (when allowed) a 10 percent deposit.
- Murder and other capital or life-sentence charges need a circuit judge for bond.
- Fairfield's licensed bondsman list is also posted in the jail lobby.
Bondsman fees, payment and getting money back: see our bail page.
↑ Back to the question list7. Where are a Fairfield arrest's charges listed?
Once booking wraps up, staff at 803-635-4841 can tell you the charges. The bond judge reads them out at the hearing too.
In South Carolina a charge's class caps the sentence. Felony classes go from A (30 years) down to F (5 years). Misdemeanor classes go from A (3 years) down to C (1 year) (S.C. Code 16-1-20). Petty cases with short jail limits remain with magistrates and town judges.
Felony files are kept by the Clerk of Court in the courthouse basement, 101 S. Congress Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180, 803-712-6526. Final charges in General Sessions are the Sixth Circuit Solicitor's call; that office shares the courthouse address, 803-712-1735.
↑ Back to the question list8. How does someone in the Fairfield County jail get a lawyer?
During the bond hearing, the person should say they want a public defender. The person swears to a statement about money and owes a $40 fee, though the clerk can lower it or let it go (S.C. Code 17-3-30).
- Sixth Circuit Public Defender, Fairfield office: courthouse, 101 South Congress Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180, 803-815-4074
- South Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense: 1330 Lady Street, Suite 401, Columbia, SC 29201, 803-734-1343
Hiring private counsel is another route. Jail calls and visits are the wrong place to discuss the case.
↑ Back to the question list9. Visiting the Faith Lane jail: what are the rules?
Visits here are 30 minutes long, one per person each week, by appointment. Which day depends on the person's status:
- Awaiting sentence: any weekday
- In administrative segregation or protective custody: Fridays
- Sentenced women: weekends, 9:00 a.m. to noon
- Sentenced men: weekends, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Up to three visitors share a booth. Staff may monitor and record visits. Leave money, food and clothes at home, since none can be brought in. Former inmates of this jail have to wait six months or more after release, then ask in writing, for example with the visitation reinstatement form.
Booking a slot, ID and dress questions all go to 803-635-4841. Our visiting guide has more pointers.
↑ Back to the question list10. Can I add money to a Fairfield County jail account?
Account money typically covers snacks, soap, stamps and phone time. Phone the Detention Center at 803-635-4841 on a weekday. Find out the current deposit options, what each costs, any cap, and what number the account uses.
Drop-offs of cash, food or clothing at a visit aren't accepted. For common deposit methods, see our money guide; for what an account buys, see our commissary guide.
↑ Back to the question list11. Phone calls and messages: what does Fairfield allow?
Calls go outward from the jail; families can't dial in to an inmate. Ring 803-635-4841 and ask which phone provider serves the jail, how to open a calling account and the cost per call. Find out whether tablets or electronic messages exist too.
Assume someone is listening on every call; leave the case for the attorney. Our phone guide and email guide explain how such systems usually run.
↑ Back to the question list12. Can I mail letters or photos to Faith Lane?
The street address is 10 Faith Lane, Winnsboro, SC 29180. Before sending anything, phone 803-635-4841. Confirm the mailing address, any number the envelope needs, and which items get through, like photos, books or greeting cards.
Address it to the person's legal name, with your return address; never mail cash. General rules appear in our mail guide.
↑ Back to the question list13. How does a relative collect property from Faith Lane?
Wallets, clothes and other items taken at booking get stored at the Detention Center, 10 Faith Lane, Winnsboro, SC 29180, until they leave. To collect items while they are still inside, phone 803-635-4841 on a weekday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Ask whether a release form signed by the inmate is required, and which photo ID works.
Evidence is different. A phone, car keys or similar items seized by the arresting agency come back only through that agency.
↑ Back to the question list14. Who handles medical needs at the Faith Lane jail?
Counties must give jailed people basic needs, medical care included (S.C. Code 24-5-80). The Detention Center's medical unit has its own number, 803-815-4087. Share the person's name, their medicines and doses, and their doctor's contact details.
Prescriptions or medical equipment come in only with medical staff approval. Mention any mental health worries right away. For a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
↑ Back to the question list15. Does someone have a Fairfield warrant, and what next?
The Sheriff's Civil and Warrants division handles service of warrants countywide, 803-635-4141. In the county seat, officers of its Department of Public Safety serve them as well, 803-635-4511. Ask the agency for that area about a name during business hours, or ask at the magistrate court. State absconders appear on PPP Most Wanted Offenders; federal fugitives on the Marshals' 15 Most Wanted. Named on a warrant yourself? Get legal advice, then surrender to the issuing judge, or ask its clerk to reschedule. Magistrate court: 115 B South Congress Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180, 803-635-4525.
↑ Back to the question list16. Which office knows the next Fairfield court date?
Each Fairfield court sets its own dates:
- Magistrate's Office (bond hearings, minor crimes, preliminary hearings): 115 B South Congress Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180, 803-635-4525
- Town court, for arrests by town police: 117 West Washington Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180, 803-635-1302
- General Sessions felony dates, set by the Solicitor's office: 101 S. Congress Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180, 803-712-1735
For how a local case moves, see our court guide.
↑ Back to the question list17. Fairfield arrest, federal charge: where are they held?
Fairfield's federal cases fall under the Rock Hill Division, with hearings at 901 Richland Street, Columbia, SC 29201 (Matthew J. Perry, Jr. U.S. Courthouse), 803-765-5816.
- Release or detention gets decided when the person first sees the federal judge (18 U.S.C. 3142).
- Pretrial, the U.S. Marshals hold them, frequently in rented county jail beds. Ask which one at 901 Richland Street, Suite 1300, Columbia, SC 29201, 803-765-5821.
- Following a sentence, try the Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator with a name or register number.
18. How can families trace someone ICE picked up?
Immigration cases tend to unfold in this order:
- ICE files a detainer, Form I-247A, with Fairfield's jail.
- The jail may keep the person up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released (8 CFR 287.7(d)).
- South Carolina also gives jails 72 hours to check a person's status. If someone lacks lawful status, the jail tells Homeland Security (S.C. Code 23-3-1100).
- ICE officers take the person into federal custody. The agency's South Carolina office: 3950 Faber Place Drive, North Charleston, SC 29405, 843-746-9800.
- Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator. An A-number works best; otherwise pair the name with a birth country. With no result, phone ICE.
19. Was the person moved to a South Carolina prison?
A sentence over three months moves the person to the South Carolina Department of Corrections (S.C. Code 24-3-20). Reception and evaluation comes first, then a move to whichever prison the state assigns.
- State prisoners, but not Faith Lane's, show up in the SCDC inmate search, current to the prior midnight.
- Phone the state's VINE line, 866-727-2846, for custody alerts, or SCDC headquarters at 4444 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210, 803-896-8500.
- Prison addresses and visiting basics: our South Carolina state prisons page.
20. What if a Fairfield County minor is arrested?
Minors don't belong in the adult jail; South Carolina caps any stay there at six hours, and never for a child ten or younger (S.C. Code 63-19-820). A detention hearing follows inside 48 hours, not counting weekends or holidays (S.C. Code 63-19-830).
Youths held for court go to the state's Juvenile Detention Complex, 1725 Shivers Road, Columbia, SC 29210, 803-896-9440. For the youth's location and court schedule, phone the local Department of Juvenile Justice office, 115 A S. Congress Street, Winnsboro, SC 29180, 803-712-6533.
↑ Back to the question list21. Which police agencies arrest people in Fairfield County?
