Greenwood County Inmate Search: Finding Someone Booked at the Edgefield Street Jail

Adults picked up by deputies, city or town officers, campus police or troopers in this county go to the Greenwood County Detention Center, which sits in the Law Enforcement Center at 528 Edgefield Street, Greenwood, SC 29646. Use these answers to pin down where someone is held. Charges, bond, lawyers, visits, mail, money, warrants, hearings and the area's police departments are covered as well.

That number is 864-943-8059. Mention the legal name plus birth date when Edgefield Street answers. Ask about each charge, any bond figure and the first hearing. Our bail page lays out release choices, and hearings and judges are on our court guide.

Search for an Inmate or Active Arrest Warrant in Greenwood County

1. How do I search the Greenwood County jail roster?

The county's Detention Center page points to a single official lookup. Steps that tend to work:

  1. Pull up the Detention Center inmate lookup.
  2. Type the surname first. Narrow with a first name if dozens of rows appear.
  3. Click into every possible match, and compare the listed age with the person you are looking for.
  4. Jot down any booking number, charge or bond amount listed. It speeds up every later phone call.
  5. For a second opinion, ring the jail at 864-943-8059.

Jail rosters count as public records in this state (S.C. Code 30-4-30(D)(3)), so staff can say whether a named person is in custody.

2. The name never comes up. What could explain that?

An empty search can have several causes:

  • Intake is still underway. Prints, a photo and paperwork can eat up several hours.
  • Release already happened. Bond may be paid already, or the court may have freed them.
  • Typos and nicknames. Run the search again with any maiden name, middle name or other spelling.
  • Age. People under 18 are placed with the state juvenile system, so the adult list skips them.
  • Another agency's custody. A neighboring county, SCDC or federal officers may be holding them.

Calling the Detention Center at 864-943-8059 settles it fastest. If that line is tied up, the Sheriff's Office down the hall answers at 864-942-8600.

3. Could a jail outside Greenwood County be holding them?

Locally there is just one adult lockup, on Edgefield Street. A person picked up close to a border, or named in a warrant from elsewhere, could be at one of these jails:

4. Is a booking photo or arrest report available?

Reach the Sheriff's Office at 864-942-8600, or send a written request through the county's public records portal. Incident reports describing what happened and where are open to the public (S.C. Code 30-4-50(A)(8)). Agencies get ten business days to respond (S.C. Code 30-4-30(C)).

  • Websites that post booking photos must pull one, at no charge, within 30 days of a certified letter. The letter must show the case was thrown out, expunged, or closed with a not guilty verdict (S.C. Code 17-1-60, from 2016 Act No. 132).
  • For a photo taken by immigration agents, file with the ICE records request page, though approval is uncommon.
  • Other federal agencies seldom release booking pictures at all. One exception: a Marshals fugitive poster may include a photo.

5. Will anyone notify me once they leave the jail?

SC VINE, a free state service, shows whether someone is in custody and which jail or prison has them. After a search, you can register for phone, text or email notices.

  • The state constitution protects a right to bail for most charges (S.C. Const. art. I, § 15).
  • Release on a written promise, with no money paid, is where the judge begins for non-capital charges.
  • A judge can also ask for full cash or a bondsman. Some get to pay ten percent to the clerk. GPS tracking may be added.
  • Bond on murder and other life or death charges comes only from a circuit judge.

Code 23-3-1100). That status, along with flight risk, is also weighed when bond is set (S.C. Code 22-5-510(D)(4)).
